4th International Seminar cum Exhibition on Naval weapon Systems (NAVARMS-19) Held in New Delhi

  • The fourth edition of International Seminar cum Exhibition on Naval Weapon Systems ‘NAVARMS-19’ was inaugurated at Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis, Development Enclave, New Delhi on December 2019.
  • The two day event is based on the the “Make in India – Fight Category: Opportunities and Imperatives”.
  • NAVARMS is the only international seminar and exhibition on Naval Weapon Systems conducted in India to invite all the stakeholders in life cycle management of Naval Weapons and provide a common platform to share their views and concerns.
  • The past three editions of NAVARMS were held in 2007, 2010 and 2013.

Switzerland to Serve as Partner Country for BioAsia 2020 in Hyderabad

  • The flagship event of Telangana’s pharma and biotech industry, BioAsia 2020, is scheduled to be held from February 17 to 19, 2019 in Hyderabad.
  • The theme of 2019 event will be ”Today For Tomorrow”.
  • Switzerland will participate as the country partner for the 17th edition of BioAsia.

Archeological Survey of India Identifies 138 Monuments in India as ‘Must-See’

  • The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has identified 138 monuments in the country as ‘must-see’.
  • Those interested can see the complete list on the “must-see” portal, asimustsee.nic.in. of the ASI.
  • The “Must See” list features a number of outstanding Indian monuments and archaeological sites, under the protection of the ASI, including some UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well.
  • There are 38 World Heritage Sites in India, out of which 22 cultural sites including monuments and caves are under ASI protection. 

Climate activist Greta Thunberg Named Time’s Youngest Person of the Year

  • The 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg has become the youngest-ever individual  to be named TIME’s Person of the Year on December 11, 2019.
  • She has broken the long held record for youngest Person of the Year in TIME’s history by 25-year-old Charles Lindbergh, selected as most influential man of 1927.

Puma Signs Sunil Chhetri as Brand Ambassador for 3 Years

  • The German multinational brand PUMA has roped in Indian national football team’s captain Sunil Chhetri as the brand ambassador under a three-year deal.
  • The 35-year-old Bengaluru Football Club skipper now joins global players like Antoine Griezmann, Romelu Lukaku, Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero among others to be Puma’s brand ambassador.

Rani Rampal and Saurabh Chaudhary Wins Sports Person of the Year awards at the FICCI India Sports Awards 2019

  • Indian women’s hockey team captain, Rani Rampal, has been awarded with the Sportsperson of the Year Award 2019 at the FICCI India Sports Awards 2019.
  • In male category, Asian Games gold medalist shooter Saurabh Chaudhary won the Sportsperson of the Year Award 2019.
  • The awards ceremony was held at the FICCI Federation House, in New Delhi, on December 11.

India’s GS Lakshmi Becomes First Women Referee to officiate a men’s ODI

  • GS Lakshmi has become the first woman match referee to officiate a men’s ODI.
  • The 51-year-old Indian oversaw the opening match of the third series of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, which took place between the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on December 8.
  • In May 2019, Lakshmi became the first woman to get appointed onto the ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
  • She first officiated as a match referee in a domestic women’s cricket in 2008-09.
  • Till now, she has overseen three women’s ODI matches, seven women’s T20 Internationals and 16 men’s T20 Internationals.

Former US Federal Reserve Chief Paul Volcker Passes Away at 92

  • Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, known for his battles against inflation in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has passed away. He was 92.
  • Volcker served as chairman of the US central banking system, Federal Reserve System, from August 1979 through 1987.

UNICEF Day 2019: December 11

  • Every year the UNICEF Day is observed on December 11.
  • It was on December 11, 1946 that the United Nations General Assembly created UNICEF as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to improve the health, nutrition, education, and general welfare of children devastated due to World War II.
  • UNICEF’s name was subsequently changed from United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to United Nations Children’s Fund though, it continued to be known by the popular acronym based on the previous title.

International Universal Health Coverage Day: December 12

  • International Universal Health Coverage Day is a United Nations’ recognized international day celebrated every year on December 12 to provide access to quality and affordable health care to every person across the globe.
  • The day was proclaimed by UN on December 12, 2017.
  • 2019 theme is ‘Keep The Promise’.

International Day of Neutrality: December 12

  • International Day of Neutrality is a United Nations recognized day held on December 12 each year to raise public awareness of the value of neutrality in international relations.
  • It was officially declared by a UN General Assembly resolution adopted in February 2017 and first observed on December 12 of the same year.
  • Neutrality is defined as the legal status arising from the abstention of a state from all participation in a war between other states, the maintenance of an attitude of impartiality toward the belligerents.
