Olga Tokarczuk and Peter Handke Awarded Nobel Prize for Literature for 2018 and 2019 Respectively

  • The Swedish Academy has named Polish author Olga Tokarczuk for 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature while Austrian novelist Peter Handke have been awarded 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • Peter Handke has been awarded “for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience.”
  • Olga Tokarczuk won the award “for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.”
  • The 2018 award was delayed last year following a scandal that included allegations of sexual misconduct.

Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme ‘DHRUV’ Inaugurated in Bengaluru

  • The Union Minister for Human Resources Development (HRD), Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank, launched an ambitious initiative named ‘Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme – DHRUV’ at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) headquarter at Bengaluru on October 10, 2019.
  • The unique programme DHRUV will identify talented students from across the country and mentor them in the centre of excellence for 14 days so that they can reach their full potential and work for the society.
  • The selected student will be christened as Dhruv Tara.
  • 60 outstandingly talented students have been selected in the first batch of DHRUV programme.

Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Launches ‘Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan’ (SUMAN) Scheme for Pregnant Women

  • The 13th Conference of Central Council of Health and Family Welfare was held in New Delhi on October 10, 2019.
  • As a part of the event, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan launched Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) initiative.
  • Under the SUMAN initiative pregnant women, mothers up to 6 months after delivery, and all sick newborns will be given free healthcare benefits in all public health facilities.
  • The purpose of the scheme is to bring down maternal and infant mortality rates in the country.

Goa Government Replaces Traditional “Dial 100” Service With “Dial 112”

  • Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has launched a new integrated emergency number ”112” for police, fire and medical emergencies replacing the traditional dial number ”100”.
  • The service has been launched in the state with the help of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • In the first phase, the dial ”112” service will cover only police department.
  • The Fire and medical services would be brought under the new dial number in the second phase.
  • With the help of the new service, the response time of agencies concerned to any emergency will come down drastically and will effectively bring down prevalence of crime.

Ind-Ra reduces India’s GDP growth rate prediction for FY20 to 6.1%

  • India Ratings and Research has slashed India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for 2019-20 (FY20) to 6.1%.
  • This is second such downgrade in two months from Ind-Ra. Earlier it reduced the prediction to 6.7% from 7.3%.

Moody’s Slashes India’s GDP Growth Forecast to 5.8% for FY20 and 6.6% for FY21

  • Moody’s Investors Service has lowered its 2019-20 GDP growth forecast for India to 5.8 percent from 6.2 percent earlier.
  • For 2020-21, the growth is expected to pick up to 6.6 percent.

RBI approves formation of ‘Kerala Bank’ by merger of district co-operative banks

  • The Reserve Bank of India has given approval to the Kerala state government to amalgamate 13 district cooperative banks (DCBs) with the Kerala State Cooperative Bank and form the new entity named “Kerala Bank”. (Total of 14 banks)
  • RBI has given the approval with certain conditions to be fulfilled.
  • The Kerala Bank will begin its services from November 1.

Merger proposal of Lakshmi Vilas Bank with Indiabulls Housing Fin rejected by RBI

  • Reserve Bank of India has rejected the proposal from Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) for the merger of LVB with lndiabulls Housing Finance.
  • Competition Commission of India (CCI) had given its nod to the proposed amalgamation in June 2019. However, after rejection from RBI, amalgamation will not take place.
  • In September, RBI had placed Lakshmi Vilas Bank under Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) due to high level of bad loans, lack of sufficient capital to manage risks and negative return on assets for two consecutive years.

Sprinter Nirmala Sheoran banned by AIU for 4 years

  • Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has banned Indian sprinter Nirmala Sheroen for four years and has also stripped off her two Asian Championships gold medals.
  • She has been banned for being tested positive for the steroids drostanolone and metenolone at a competition back home in June 2018. The period of her ban will start from June 28, 2018.
  • Nirmala had won gold medals in the 400m and 4x400m relay at the 2017 Asian Championships in India.

World Mental Health Day: October 10

  • Each year, the World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10 October worldwide for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.
  • Theme 2019:Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention
  • The day was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health.

National Postal Day: October 10

  • In India, the National Postal Day is celebrated annually on 10 October, as an extension of World Post Day, which is celebrated on 9 October.
  • National Post Day aims to commemorate the role played by the Indian postal department for the past 150 years, which was founded in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie.
