Centre launches fertiliser DBT 2.0 initiatives

  • Central Government has launched the Phase-II of the Direct Benefit Transfer of Fertilizer Subsidy (DBT 2.0). It was launched by Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Shri D.V. Sadananda Gowda.
  • The Phase-I of DBT system in Fertilizers (DBT 1.0) aimed at the release of 100% subsidy on various fertilizer grades to the fertilizer companies on the basis of actual sales made by the retailer to the beneficiaries. 
  • Under Phase-II, three new initiatives have been launched:
    • DBT Dashboards- with details of fertiliser supply, availability and requirement at national, state and district level
    • PoS 3.0 Software: The Multi-lingual facility would provide Aadhar virtual ID option for registration, login and sale activity in DBT software.
    • Desktop PoS Version: Retailers with laptops and computer systems can use high-speed broadband service for fertilizer sales.
  • The Centre bears over Rs 70,000 crore annually as fertiliser subsidy to give cheaper farm nutrient to farmers.

Deposits in Jan Dhan accounts cross Rs 1 lakh crore

  • Deposits in bank accounts opened under Jan Dhan scheme have crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark.
  • As per the latest finance ministry data, the total balance in over 36.06 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts was at Rs 1,00,495.94 crore as on July 3. 

NABARD to raise Rs 60,000 crore via non-convertible debentures in 2019-20

  • National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) will raise long-term funds of Rs 60,000 crore through nonconvertible debentures in the current financial year 2019-20.
  • The own requirement of funds for NABARD is assessed at Rs 30,000 crore. The remaining Rs 30,000 crore will be for the Centre to cover the shortfall in various schemes in rural development and sanitation in FY20.
  • NABARD has already raised Rs 11,000 crore in the first quarter ended June 30, 2019. Chairman of NABARD- Harsh Bhanwala 

Govt to launch 6th tranche of CPSE ETF on July 18; to raise Rs 10,000 crore

  • The government is planning to raise up to Rs 10,000 crore from the sixth tranche of CPSE Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) which would be launched on July 18, 2019.
  • The CPSE Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) tracks shares of 11 Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) — ONGC, NTPC, Coal India, IOC, Rural Electrification Corp, Power Finance Corp, Bharat Electronics, Oil India, NBCC India, NLC India and SJVN.
  • The follow-on fund offer (FFO) 5 will have a base issue size of Rs 8,000 crore with an option to retain oversubscription of another Rs 2,000 crore.
  • Through the earlier five tranches of the CPSE ETF, the government has already raised Rs 38,500 crore-Rs 3,000 crore from the first tranche in March 2014, Rs 6,000 crore in January 2017, Rs 2,500 crore from the third in March 2017, Rs 17,000 crore in November 2018 and Rs 10,000 crore in March 2019.

Connaught Place 9th most expensive office location; Top- Hong Kong

  • New Delhi’s Connaught Place (CP) is the ninth most expensive office location in the world with an annual rent of nearly $144 per sq ft, according to property consultant CBRE.
  • Hong Kong’s Central district retained the top spot as the world’s most expensive market for prime office rents, with the prime occupancy costs valued at $322 per sq.ft.
  • London’s (West End) is ranked 2nd, followed by Hong Kong (Kowloon) and New York (Midtown Manhattan).

Delhi – Lucknow Tejas Express To Become India’s First Train Operated by Private Players

  • The Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express may become the first train of Indian Railways to be run by private operators.
  • As a part of the 100 Days Action Plan of the Indian Railways, two of its trains will be handed over to the private sector for operation.
    • The custody of the trains will be transferred to IRCTC, which will eventually make plan to rope in private operators for on-board services.
    • IRCTC will pay annual lease charges to Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) for the train rakes.
    • The on-board services would be handed over to private players after an open bidding process. 
    • The decision is part of Indian Railways plan to test private sector participation in the running of trains.
    • The routes for the trains, within 500-kilometres distance, will be identified on the basis of low congestion and tourist spots they can connect.

Arun Kumar appointed as Chief of DGCA

  • Arun Kumar has been appointed as the Director General in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
  • He is an additional secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Before Arun Kumar, B S Bhullar was holding the full-time charge of DGCA chief.

Devika Sethi Pens Books Titled ‘War over Words: Censorship in India, 1930-1960’

  • The book named “War over Words: Censorship in India, 1930-1960” has been authored by Devika Sethi and published by Cambridge University Press.
  • Sethi teaches modern Indian history at IIT-Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
  • This book recovers, narrates, and interrogates the history of censorship of publications in India over three crucial decades – encompassing the Gandhian anti-colonial movement, the Second World War, Partition, and the early years of Independent India.

Dutee wins 100m gold in World Universiade

  • Dutee Chand has won the Gold Medal in the 100m dash event at World Universiade. She completed the race in 11.32 seconds.
  • With this, she has become the first Indian woman athlete to win a gold medal in the World Universiade.
  • The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It is held once in every two years. This year it is being held in Naples, Italy.

Para-Athlete Toran Yadav Wins 3 Silver Medals for India at World Wealth Yoga Festival and Championship

  • Toran Yadav, a para-athlete from Khatti village in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh has made India proud by winning 3 silver medals at the 4th World Wealth Yoga Festival and Championship held at Bulgaria.
  • The 19 year-old is practicing yoga since the age of 9.
