Delhi Among top 10 most-visited cities in the world ranking, Hong Kong Tops: Euromonitor International

  • For the first time, the national capital of India, Delhi has entered the list of world’s top 10 most popular destinations in the world, according to the recent data published by Euromonitor International.
  • Euromonitor International has unveiled its latest Top 100 City Destinations Ranking for 2019.
  • The list has been topped by Hong Kong.
  • It is also for the first time that New York was no longer among the top 10 most-visited cities in the world.
  • The report was based on international arrival data for the year of 2018 in conjunction with estimated part-year data for 2019.
  • London based Euromonitor International is the world’s leading independent provider of strategic market research data and analysis on thousands of products and services around the world.

India Among Top 10 in 2019 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI): Report

  • The 2019 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) was presented at the ongoing COP25 climate summit in Madrid, Spain on December 10, 2019.
  • India has for the first time emerged among the top 10 countries with higher climate performance.
  • It has been ranked at 9th spot in the index for its Climate Policy performance among 57 countries and European Union.
  • However, the first three places of the ranking remain unoccupied, since none of the countries is on a path compatible with the Paris climate targets, to implement strategies to limit global warming below 2 or even 1.5°C.
  • Sweden (4th) and Denmark (5th) were the top rankers in the index.
  • The ranking takes into consideration various criteria’s such as
    • country’s energy use,
    • its per capita emissions,
    • its emission reduction targets for 2030,
    • its national and international climate policy,
    • renewable energy deployment and
    • past trends of emissions.

Global arms sales rise by nearly 5% in 2018: SIPRI Report

  • A new report titled “SIPRI Top 100 arms-producing and military services companies, 2018” was released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute on December 9, 2019.
  • The report states that the sales of arms and military services witnessed an increase of 4.6 percent worldwide in 2018, while the market is dominated by the United States.
  • Key Findings
    • Sales of arms and military services by the top 100 firms went up by 47 percent since 2002, the year from which comparable data is first available.
    • The turnover of the 100 biggest arms manufacturers (excluding Chinese firms) came to 420 billion dollars, an annual increase of 4.6 percent.
    • U.S. firms dominated the list with a turnover of 246 billion U.S. dollars (accounting for 59 percent of the global market), up 7.2 percent from the previous year.
    • Russia was second in the rankings for arms production, with 8.6 per cent of the market, followed by United Kingdom on 8.4 per cent and France on 5.5 per cent.
    • China was not included in the survey due to “insufficient data”.
    • 80 of the world’s 100 top arms producers were based in the U.S., Russia and Europe. Of the remaining 20, six were based in in Japan, three each in Israel, India and South Korea, respectively, two in Turkey and one each in Australia, Canada and Singapore.

Abu Dhabi named World’s Leading Sports Tourism Destination

  • The United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi has won the award for the World’s Leading Sports Tourism Destination at the 26th edition of the World Travel Awards in Muscat, Oman.
  • This is the seventh consecutive win of Abu Dhabi for this coveted award.
  • WTA was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry.

30 Rafale Jets Tail Number to Feature Ex-IAF Chief BS Dhanoa’s Initials

  • The Indian Air Force has decided to fly the 30 Indian Rafale fighter jets with the tail initials ‘BS’ in honour of the recently retired Air Force Chief Birender Singh Dhanoa, as he played key role in helping the Indian Air Force to get the jet.
  • What is tail number? It is a unique identification number painted on every aircraft, frequently on the tail.
  • India had signed deal for purchase of 36 Rafale jets from French aerospace major Dassault Aviation for the IAF at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore.
  • Out of 36 Rafale jets, 30 are fighter jets and six are trainers.
  • The 6 Rafale trainer aircraft will carry RB series tail numbers which stand for Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, the current Chief of Air Staff.

Exim Bank provides USD 500 mn credit to Bangladesh for defence procurement

  • India is providing USD 500 million (Rs 3,561 crore) line of credit (LoC) to Bangladesh for the purpose of financing defence-related procurement in Bangladesh.
  • Export Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) entered into an agreement on April 11, 2019 with Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Division for Government of India-supported line of credit (LoC) of USD 500 million.
  • The agreement under the LoC is effective from November 7 for a period of 10 years from the date of signing of the agreement.

Third India-Australia Foreign and Defence Secretaries Dialogue (2+2) held in New Delhi

  • The third India-Australia Secretary-level 2+2 Dialogue was held in New Delhi on December 9, 2019.
  • The Indian delegation was led by Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar and Foreign Secretary Shri Vijay Gokhale.
  • The Australian side was led by Defence Secretary Mr Greg Moriarty and Foreign Secretary Ms Frances Adamson.

News Broadcasters Federation Elected Journalist Arnab Goswami as President

  • The governing board of the News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) has elected journalist Arnab Goswami as its new president.
  • Goswami is the managing director and editor-in-chief of Republic TV.
  • The News Broadcasters Association is a private association of 78 news channels in 14 languages from 25 states.

India Finishes Atop with 301 Medals at 2019 South Asian Games in Nepal

  • The 2019 South Asian Games, (officially, XIII South Asian Games) was held from December 1-10, 2019  in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur of Nepal.
  • Seven countries competed in the competition having 27 games. They are: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • India finished the 13th edition of the tournament way ahead of other teams in the tally with 300 medals including 165 Gold, 92 Silver, 44 Bronze.

Inventor of Barcode, George Laurer, Passes Away at 94

  • George Joseph Laurer, known for the invention of the Universal Product Code (UPC), commonly known as the barcode, in 1973 at IBM has passed away.
  • He was 94.
  • Laurer was an electrical engineer with IBM in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park in the early 1970s when he spearheaded the development of the UPC to transform retail and other industries around the world.

World Human Rights Day: December 10

  • Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10 December annually across the world, as it was on this day in 1948 that United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclamed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
  • UDHR is a milestone document proclaiming the first ever global enunciation of human rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
