2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Jointly Awarded to 3 Scientists for Development of Lithium-ion Batteries

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2019 jointly to three scientists namely:
    • John B Goodenough, USA
    • M Stanley Whittingham, USA
    • Akira Yoshino, Japan
  • They have been awarded “for the development of lithium-ion batteries.”
  • The lightweight, rechargeable and powerful lithium-ion battery are now used in everything from mobile phones to laptops and electric vehicles.

India Ranks 68th While Singapore Tops the WEF Global Competitiveness Index 2019

  • India has been ranked 68th in the annual Global Competitiveness Index released by the World Economic Forum on October 9.
  • This year India has moved down to 10 places as compared to last year.
  • Singapore has replaced the United States to top the index as the world’s most competitive economy.
  • United States, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Switzerland occupy the top 5 positions respectively in the index.
  • The Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) uses 103 indicators, grouped into 12 pillars, to map the competitiveness landscape of 141 economies.

India Formally Receives First Rafale Fighter Jet From France

  • The first India specific Rafale fighter jet was symbolically handed over to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Bordeaux, France.
  • Raksha Mantri is in France for a two-day official visit from October 8-9, 2019 for bilateral talk with President of the French Republic, Mr Emmanuel Macron.
  • Rajnath Singh has also become the first Indian minister to undertake sortie onboard Rafale, the state-of-the-art medium multi role combat aircraft.
  • In September 2016, India exchanged Rs 59,000 crore deal with France for 36 Rafale fighter jets.
  • All 36 jets are expected to arrive in India by September 2022 and the first batch of four Rafale jets will fly to their home base in India by May 2020.

RBI to bring in Internal Ombudsman for non-bank Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) Issuers

  • The Reserve Bank of India has announced to introduce an internal ombudsman scheme at the large non-bank PPI issuers i.e entities that have more than 10 million pre-paid payment instruments outstanding.
  • The internal ombudsman is intended to facilitate a swift and cost-effective complaint redressal mechanism within the entity and provide an additional tier for grievance redressal.

RBI instructs SLBC to identify one district in state and make it 100% digitally-enabled within one year

  • The Reserve Bank of India has instructed all the State/ UT Level Bankers Committees (SLBCs/ UTLBCs) to identify one district in their respective States/ UTs on a pilot basis make the district 100% digitally-enabled within one year.
  • SLBC/UTLBC may choose the district in consultation with banks and stakeholders.
  • The identified district shall be allotted to a bank having a significant footprint

Reliance Mutual Fund Renamed as Nippon India Mutual Fund

  • Reliance Mutual Fund has been renamed as Nippon India Mutual Fund as Nippon Life has become the single largest shareholder in the company.
  • This Asset Management Company (AMC) has been acquired by Japan’s largest life insurance company Nippon Life Insurance by acquiring 75 percent stake in the company, allowing Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Capital to exit from the mutual funds business.
  • Nippon India Mutual Fund has now become the largest foreign-owned AMC in India.
  • In Reliance Mutual Fund, both Reliance Capital and Nippon Life held 42.88 percent stake each, while the rest was with public shareholders.

Antonio Costa Re-elected as Prime Minister of Portugal

  • Portuguese incumbent prime minister Antonio Costa has once again won the country’s general election to be re-appointed to the post.
  • 58-year-old PM’s Socialist party won 36.65% of the vote to win the election, however, the party fell short of an outright majority.

Gymnast Simone Biles Claims 15th World Championship Gold as US Wins World Gymnastics Team Gold

  • US gymnastics star Simone Biles clinched her 21st medal, as the United States claimed the women’s team gold at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany.
  • It was the 15th career gold for Biles.
  • With 21 medals, Biles has broken the tie with Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina to win most number of medals overall at the world championships.

World Post Day: October 9

  • World Post day is celebrated each year on October 9, to create awareness about the role of postal services in the lives of people, as well as its contribution to global development.
  • October 9 also marks the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which started in 1874 in Switzerland.

Important Cabinet Approvals: October 9, 2019

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given ex-post facto approval for the MoUs between India and Foreign Broadcasters in the field of Radio and Television.
  • The Cabinet has been apprised of the Progress under National Health Mission (NHM) and Decisions of the Empowered Programme Committee and Mission Steering Group of the NHM.
  • Approval to relaxation of Aadhaar seeding of data of the beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan)
  • Inclusion of 5,300 DP families of Jammu & Kashmir-1947 who initially opted to move outside the State of Jammu & Kashmir but later on returned and settled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir, in the Rehabilitation Package approved by the Cabinet on 30.11.2016 for Displaced Families PoJK and Chhamb under the PM’s Development Package 2015 for Jammu & Kashmir
  • Cabinet has approved to release an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners w.e.f. 01.07.2019, representing an increase of 5% over the existing rate of 12% of the Basic pay/Pension, to compensate for price rise.
