Nation Observes 158th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore

  • The 158th birth anniversary of Asia’s first Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, was celebrated across the country on May 7, 2019.
  • Tagore (nicknamed “Rabi”) was born on 7 May 1861 in the Jorasanko mansion in Calcutta to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi.
  • He became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for ‘Song Offerings,’ the English version of his collection of poems, ‘Gitanjali.’
  • Tagore reshaped Bangla language and literature in the 19th and 20th centuries

TCS becomes India’s most valued firm again; surpasses RIL in m-cap

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has now become India’s most valued firm in terms of market capitalization (market-cap) on May 09, 2019 by displacing Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to number two position.
  • TCS market-cap stood at Rs 8.13 trillion, more than RIL’ of Rs 7.95-trillion valuation as per BSE data.  RIL has lost 11 percent at the bourses.

  • Apple Inc has finalized a short list of locations for its first retail store in India. It will open its first retail store in India in Mumbai.

India-China Signs protocol for Export of Indian Chilli Meal

  • India and China have signed a protocol on May 9, 2019 for export of Indian chilli meal from India to China.
  • The two countries have also agreed to resolve market access issues expeditiously in order to promote a more balanced trade.
  • Greater market access will help to bridge the widening trade deficit.

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Celebrates 59th Raising Day

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated its 59th Raising Day on May 7, 2019.
  • The BRO was formed on 7 May 1960. It is a leading road construction agency under the Ministry of Defence to provide road connectivity in border areas.
  • BRO was formed to secure India’s borders and develop infrastructure in remote areas of the north and north-east states of the country

First chronicler of Partition Prof Kirpal Singh Passes Away at 95

  • Prof Kirpal Singh, the first chronicler of Partition of Punjab passed away at the age of 95 in Chandigarh.
  • His journey in Partition’s historiography began in 1953 as a young lecturer at Khalsa College, Amritsar. He started building an archive on Partition in 1954.

Renowned Bengali Actor Mrinal Mukherjee Passes Away at 74

  • The Veteran film and TV actor of Bengali Cinema, Mrinal Mukherjee passed away suffering from cancer and liver problems at the age of 74.
  • Mukherjee had worked for over five decades in the Bengali film industry as well as Bengali TV serials and theatres

Renowned Economist Baidyanath Mishra Passes Away

Renowned Odia economist and educationist Baidyanath Mishra passed away of old-age related problems. He was 99.
