SBI to be the first bank to link saving deposits, loan pricing to repo rate

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) will use the repo rate of RBI as a benchmark to set the savings deposit interest rates and interest rates for short-term loans from May 01, 2019.
  • With this the State Bank of India will become the first bank in the country to use an external benchmark like repo for interest rates of saving deposits and loans. This has been done for quick transmission of changes in the RBI’s policy rates.
  • However, those saving deposit accounts with balance less than Rs 1 lakh and borrowers with CC/OD limits up to Rs 1 lakh will be exempted from this. These eill continue to be linked to MCLR. This has been done to insulate them from the movement of external benchmarks like repo rate.

India and World Bank Signs $137 Million Loan Agreement for the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP)

  • The World Bank has signed the loan agreement with the Government of India along with the representatives of 5 States of Government of India and Implementing Agencies for Additional Financing of USD 137 Million under the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP).
  • The five representative states are – Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand.
  • The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) loan will have a 3-year grace period and a final maturity of 16 years.

India and ADB Inks USD 26 Million Loan Agreement For Improving Drainage Infrastructure in Dibrugarh

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed $26 Million Loan Agreement with the Government of India to provide additional financing for improving drainage infrastructure in Dibrugarh in Assam.
  • The loan under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program will further support the ongoing loan of USD 51 million.
  • The Program was approved in 2011 for improving water supply infrastructure in Guwahati and solid waste management and drainage infrastructure in Guwahati and Dibrugarh

PM Inaugurates Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Archaeology at Greater Noida

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Archaeology at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh on 9 March 2019.
  • He also unveiled a statue of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya at the campus.
  • In addition to this, PM laid the foundation stone of 1320 MW Khurja Thermal Power Plant at Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh and 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Plant in Bihar through digital links.

Marayoor Jaggery of Kerala Gets Geographical Indication Tag

  • The Marayoor Jaggery, a traditional and homemade product manufactured at Marayoor, a place in Idukki district of Kerala, has bagged Geographical Indication tag.
  • Marayoor is best known for its extensive sugarcane cultivation and Marayoor Jaggery is a world famous delicacy produced from this sugarcane cultivation
  • Jaggery is a dark brown sugar balls made of condensed sugar cane juice.

Subhash Chandra Garg Appointed as New Finance Secretary

  • The Economic Affairs Secretary, Subhash Chandra Garg, has been designated as the new Finance Secretary in the Ministry of Finance on March 8, 2019.
  • He succeeds Ajay Narayan Jha who superannuated on February 28.

Jagdish Mukhi sworn in as Governor of Mizoram

  • Assam Governor, Jagdish Mukhi has been given the additional charge of Governor of Mizoram.
  • This comes after Kummanam Rajasekharan resigned from the post of Governor of Mizroram.

Japans Kane Tanaka, honored by Guinness as oldest person at 116

  • Kane Tanaka, a 116-year-old woman from Japan has been honored by the Guinness World Records as the oldest living person in the world.
  • Kane Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903. She loves playing the board game Othello.

Japan’s Arata Isozaki Wins Pritzker Architecture Prize 2019

  • Japanese architect Arata Isozaki has been named 2019 laureate of the Pritzker Prize for his extra ordinary contribution to the field of architecture. 
  • The 87 year old Isozaki is the 46th recipient as well as 8th Japanese architect to receive the prestigious Pritzker Prize. 
  • Founded in 1979, the Pritzker Prize is the highest and most prestigious honour in architecture field

General Insurance Company, Acko wins Golden Peacock Innovative Product Award – 2019

  • Acko General Insurance Limited based in Mumbai has won the Golden Peacock Innovative Product/Services Award – 2019 under the Insurance Category.
  • Apart from this Azizi Bank of Afghanistan has won the Golden Peacock Business Excellence Award (GPBEA)- 2019 in the Banking Sector.

Book “Gauri- The Urge to Fly” authored by Rhythm Wagholikar set for release

  • The book titled “Gauri- The Urge to Fly” authored by Rhythm Wagholikar is set to release on May 12 on the occasion of the Mother’s Day.
  • The book is based on Gauri Sawant, the first transgender mother of India. The cover page of the book was launched on March 08, 2019 i.e Women’s Day.
