HRD ministry launches Samagra Shiksha-Jal Suraksha’ Drive to create awareness about water conservation

  • Ministry of Human Resource Development has launched ‘Samagra Shiksha-Jal Suraksha’ drive to create awareness about Water Conservation among all school students in the country.
  • Union HRD Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched the drive at Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Auditorium, Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2 in Delhi Cantt.
  • The drive targets that each student should save 1 litre of water every day. The drive targets to connect more than 10 crore students with this programme. 10 Crore Students together can save 10 Cr. Litres of water per day,

Manipur Tops in Breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices Ranking

  • Manipur has emerged as the top most state in the ranking of Breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices, released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • According to the Breastfeeding report, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar are at the bottom positions, while Delhi is also among the worst-performing States. 
  • The Breastfeeding report is prepared based on three indicators namely
    1. early initiation of breastfeeding,
    2. exclusive breastfeeding for six months and
    3. complimentary feeding at 6-8 months of child’s age

CBDT raises limit for appeals in IT Appellate Tribunal to Rs 50 lakhs

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has increased the monetary limits for the filing of appeals by the Income Tax Department at various tribunals in order to reduce litigation.
  • For filing an appeal before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal the monetary limit has been increased from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 50 lakhs.
  • For High Court, the appeal limit has been increased from Rs 50 lakhs to Rs 1 croreFor Supreme Court, the appeal limit has been increased from Rs 1 Crore to Rs 2 Crore.

RBL Bank launches India’s first health-focused credit card

  • RBL Bank and digital healthcare platform Practo have partnered to launch an industry first co-branded health credit card.
  • This credit card is powered by Mastercard and is available on both Practo and RBL mobile apps and websites.
  •  Practo is currently the only platform in the country that lets patients manage their healthcare needs end-to-end.

‘Speed Dial – Your Partner for Life’ Initiative Launched by Max Life Insurance

  • Max Life Insurance Co. Ltd. has announced the launch of one-of-its-kind initiative, named ‘Speed Dial Max Life Insurance – Your Partner for Life’ on August 6 which coincides with the company’s fourth ‘Protection Day’.
  • Under the Speed Dial-Your Partner for Life initiative every customer will be provided a dedicated relationship manager, known as the ‘Partner for Life’ from the day of purchase of a policy for all their policy-related service needs.
  • This initiative will help the customers to get quick and easy resolution of queries and also save time by directly contacting the partner without going through time consuming interactive voice responses.
  • Max Life dedicate the 6th of every calendar month as ‘Protection Day’ with effect from May 2019.

Huawei launches own Mobile Operating System named HarmonyOS

  • Chinese telecom giant Huawei has launched its own operating system named HarmonyOS for its mobile phones. This was done as it faces the threat of losing access to Android systems and US sanctions.
  • Huawei will deploy HarmonyOS when it loses access to Android completely. Till then it will continue with Android OS. 

‘Resurgent India’- Book by Former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan Released

  • ‘Resurgent India’, a book by Dr Bimal Jalan, former Governor of Reserve Bank of India was launched on August 6, 2019. It has been published by Harper Collins.
  • Resurgent India is a sequel to Dr Jalan’s book Emerging India (2012).
  • The book identifies the main priorities to be implemented by the new government in national interest, irrespective of the political agenda of the party that come to power.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (World Tribal Day): August 9

  • The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (World Tribal Day) is held 9 August each year to protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population and recognize the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
  • The day was first pronounced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1994 to marks the date of the inaugural session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations in 1982.
  • Theme 2019: Indigenous Languages.

Nagasaki Day: August 9

  • In 2019, the world is observing the 74th anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing that took place on August 9, 1945.
  • United States dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan and was codenamed “Fat Man” due to the design of the bomb as it had a wide, round shape.
  • The atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima (August 6) forced Japan to surrender, thus ending World War II. 

Legendary Wrestler Harley Race Passes Away at 76

  • Harley Race, a legendary American professional wrestler, passed away due to complications from lung cancer. He was 76.
  • Race had begun his wrestling career at the age of 15. 
  • He has won nine world championships that included one WWA World Heavyweight Championship and eight NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
  • He was also the first NWA United States Heavyweight Champion.

Kenneth M Quinn wins MS Swamianathan award for environment protection

  • Kenneth M Quinn has been awarded the MS Swamianathan award for Environment Protection. The award was presented by Rotary Club of Madras.
  • Kenneth M Quinn is the President of the World Food Prize Foundation. He was presented the award for his contribution to global food security and sustainability.
  • The award is aimed at recognising individuals, company or NGO which has directly or indirectly responsible for heightening environmental protection and awareness in any part of the world.
