Indian start-up ecosystem continues to be the 3rd largest in the world, Top- China: NASSCOM Report

  • As per the “Indian Tech Start-up Ecosystem” released by NASSCOM, the Indian start-up ecosystem continues to be the third-largest in the world with a total of 24 Unicorns. (unicorn is a start-up with >$1Bn valuation).
  • China is on top with 206 Unicorns and US is on second with 203 unicorns. Here are some other facts from the report:
    • 8900-9300 Start-ups incepted during 2014-19, overall base growing at 12-15% y-o-y
    • 1300+ Start-ups added in 2019
    • 7 Unicorns added in 2019; total 24 unicorns are active in India
    • $ 4.4 bn Total funding received by Start-ups in 2019 (Jan-Sep)
    • 60,000 New Direct Jobs created; 1.3-1.8 Lakh New Indirect Jobs created

Prakash Javadekar Attends 15th Governing Council Meeting of South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme in Dhaka

  • The 15th Meeting of South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) Governing Council and the 6th Inter-governmental Meeting of South Asian Seas Programme (SASP) was held on 6th November 2019, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar represented India at the 15th Governing Council Meeting of SACEP.
  • SACEP is an inter-governmental organisation comprising of 8 member nations. It was established in 1982 by the South Asian governments to promote and support protection, management and enhancement of the environment in the region.
  • The member nations include:Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

27th Conference of Central and State Statistical Organizations (COCSSO) to be held at Kolkata

  • The 27th Conference of Central and State Statistical Organizations (COCSSO) will be held in Kolkata, West Bengal on 11 and 12 November 2019.
  • It is organised by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
  • The theme of the event is: “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
  • The Conference provides a platform for discussion and improved coordination between the Central and State Statistical agencies for enhancing the efficiency of the Indian Statistical System.

India, Indonesia joint naval exercise ‘Samudra Shakti’ held in Bay of Bengal

  • The Indian Navy and Indonesian Navy Bilateral Maritime Exercise ‘Samudra Shakti’ was held in the Bay of Bengal on November 06 and 07, 2019.
  • This was the second edition of Samundra Shakti. The joint exercises include manoeuvres, Surface Warfare exercises, Air Defence exercises, Weapon firing drills, Helicopter Operations and Boarding Operations.
  • Anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kamorta is jointly exercising with Indonesian warship KRI Usman Harun in this naval exercise.

Irdai directs Reliance Health Insurance to stop selling new policies

  • IRDAI has barred Reliance Health Insurance Ltd (RHICL) from selling new policies due to its weak financial health.
  • The regulator has also asked RHICL to transfer the entire policyholders’ liabilities along with financial assets to Reliance General Insurance Co Ltd (RGICL), which in turn will settle claims of the existing policyholders.
  • Irdai noted that Reliance Health Insurance was facing solvency issues. Solvency ratio loosely refers to the financial ability of an insurer to service its obligations, including payment to claims. RHICL had reported a solvency ratio of 106 per cent for the quarter ended June 30. It was below 150 per cent, which is the control level of solvency.
  • Irdai has also asked RHICL to “ring fence” its residual assets and not dispose them of without the insurance regulator’s prior written approval.

Five Indian Writers’ Novel Included in BBC’s ‘100 Novels That Shaped Our World’

  • The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) announced a list of ‘100 Novels That Shaped Our World’ which has been complied by a panel of leading writers, curators and critics.
  • The list includes books based into 10 categories – Identity; love, sex and romance; adventure; life, death and other worlds; politics, power and protest; class and society; coming of age; family and friendship; crime and conflict; and rule breakers.
  • The list also includes work of five Indian authors. They are:
    1. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
    2. The Moor’s Last Sigh by Salman Rushdie
    3. Swami and Friends by RK Narayan
    4. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
    5. A House for Mr Biswas by VS Naipaul

Dr Vinaya Shetty Becomes First Indian and Asian to be Elected General Vice President of IODA

  • Mumbai based Dr Vinaya Shetty is the first Indian as well as Asian to be elected to the position of General Vice President (GVP) of International Organisation Development Association (IODA), since its inception in 1986.
  • IODA is a non-profit association, having members from 50 countries, to initiate and support organizational and societal change processes all over the world. It is a platform for OD (Organisational Development) professionals to connect, share and exchange ideas.

Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla Conferred ABLF Global Asian Award by UAE Govt

  • Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla has been honoured with the ABLF Global Asian Award by the UAE Government in Dubai.
  • He has been awarded for being a “Powerful individual whose business footprint and commitment to excellence have engaged international interest and attention.
  • The previous recipients of the award include among others Late Dhirubhai Ambani, Mr. Lakshmi Mittal, H.E Mohamed Ali Alaber (Chairman- Emaar), H.E Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum (Chairman-Emirates).

2023 FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup to be held in India

  • India will be the host country for the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023. The sports event is scheduled to be held from January 13, 2023, till January 29, 2023. This would be the 15th edition.
  • India will soon decide the venue of the event.
  • Apart from this, Spain and the Netherlands have been selected to co-host the 2022 FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup. It will take place from July 1, 2022, till July 17, 2022.

National Cancer Awareness Day: November 7

  • Every year on November 7, India observes National Cancer Awareness Day to create awareness about the prevention and early detection of cancer.
  • The day was first observed in 2014 and coincides with the birth anniversary of the eminent and renowned scientist Marie Curie.

International Day of Radiology: November 8

  • The International Day of Radiology (IDoR) is held annually on November 8 to promote the role of medical imaging in modern healthcare.
  • The day also marks the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays.
  • The theme for 2019 IDoR is Sports Imaging (Musculoskeletal Radiology).
