Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates Conference on Empowering Women Entrepreneurs 2020 in New Delhi

  • The Union Minister for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated the inaugural session of ‘Conference on Empowering Women Entrepreneurs’ in New Delhi on March 6, 2020.
  • The three-day conference was organised by Ministry of MSME in collaboration with various industry associations like FICCI-flo, CII and India SME Forum.
  • The conference stressed on the portal MSME SAMBANDH’ and a portal ‘Udyam Sakhi’.
  • ‘MSME SAMBANDH’ gives all the relevant information about procurements made by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) from MSMEs
  • ‘Udyam Sakhi’ is meant for female entrepreneurs to provide them right information about self-employment.

Paytm Tie-up with Hyderabad Metro for QR-based tickets

  • Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd has partnered with Paytm to launch QR-code-based metro ticketing system.
  • The QR-code-based ticketing system, will help in creating tech-powered urban mobility solutions to enable commuters to travel seamlessly and avoid queues to buy tokens at the metro stations.

President Kovind Honours 15 women with Nari Shakti Puraskar 2019 on March 8

  • President Ram Nath Kovind gave away the Nari Shakti Puraskar for 2019 to 15 outstanding women in Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March 2020.
  • The National Award is given annually to individuals, groups, institutions in recognition of their exceptional work towards the cause of women empowerment, especially for vulnerable and marginalized women.
  • The awardees include 103 year old athlete Mann Kaur, Indian Air Force’s first women fighter pilots Mohana Singh, Bhawana Kanth and Avani Chaturvedi, Farmers Padala Bhudevi and Bina Devi, Artisan Arifa Jaan, Environmentalist Chami Murmu, Entrepreneur Nilza Wangmo, Automotive research professional Rashmi Urdhwardeshe, Lady Mason Kalavati Devi, Twin Mountaineers Tashi and Nungshi Malik classical vocalist Kaushiki Chakroborty and 98 year old Karthyayini Amma who topped the literacy exam in 2018 and 105 year old Bhageerathi Amma.

India Gets Observer Status in Indian Ocean Commission

  • India has been admitted to the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) as an observer state on 6th March, 2020.
  • This makes India, the fifth nation to receive Observer status in IOC.
  • The other four observers are China, Malta, European Union and International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
  • The COI is composed of five African Indian Ocean nations namely-   Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion (an overseas region of France), and Seychelles.

BRAC tops 500 Global NGOs List for 5th Straight Year

  • The Bangladesh based international development organization, BRAC, has topped the list of top 500 Global Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) for the 5th consecutive year.
  • The list of the top 500 global NGOs of year 2020 was released by Geneva-based organization NGO Adviser.
  • The rankings of the top 500 global NGOs is released every year by NGO Adviser based on various aspects such as the impact, innovation, governance and sustainability of the NGO.

Denys Shmygal Sworn in as new Prime Minister of Ukraine, Replacing Oleksiy Honcharuk

  • On 4 March 2020, Denys Anatoliyovych Shmyhal has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
  • He replaces Oleksiy Honcharuk, who resigned from the post, over false accusation against him.

Daren Tang of Singapore elected as Director General of WIPO

  • The Coordination Committee of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has nominated Mr. Daren Tang from Singapore for the post of Director General.
  • The WIPO General Assembly will meet in an extraordinary session on May 7-8, 2020, to confirm the Coordination Committee’s nomination.
  • The term of the current Director General, Mr. Francis Gurry will end on September 30, 2020.
  • WIPO Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland.

  • International Women’s Day is being celebrated on 8th March every year to celebrates women’s social, economical, cultural and political achievements and their increasing visibility in every sphere of life.
