India Signs USD 3 Billion Deal with Russia to Lease Nuclear Submarine for 10 Years

  • The Government of India has signed a USD 3 billion deal with Russian Government for the lease of a nuclear-powered attack submarine for the Indian Navy for a period of 10 years.
  • Russia will deliver its Akula class submarine to the Indian Navy by 2025. This submarine will be known as Chakra III.
  • It will be the third Russian submarine to be leased to the Indian Navy.
  • The first Russian nuclear-powered submarine was INS Chakra I taken in 1988 under a three year lease.
  • A second was INS Chakra II taken on lease in 2012 for a period of 10 years.

WLA to buy atleast 1 lakh pieces of notes from Banks: RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India has issued a guideline for White Label ATMs (WLAs) operators in India. The main highlights are:
    • WLA can buy cash, above a threshold of 1 lakh pieces (and in multiples thereof) of any denomination, directly from the Reserve Bank or Currency Chests against full payment.
    • WLA can offer services like bill payment and Interoperable Cash Deposit services, subject to technical feasibility and certification from National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
    • WLA can display advertisements pertaining to non-financial products / services anywhere within the WLA premises.
    • WLA can source cash from any scheduled bank, including Cooperative Banks and Regional Rural Banks.

IRDAI, NHA forms a working group to curb fraud in Ayushman Bharat scheme; Head- Dinesh Arora

  • The National Health Authority (NHA) and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) have formed a working group to detect and deter fraud under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
  • Dinesh Arora, Deputy CEO of NHA will be the chairman of the working group. The group will have 10 members.
  • The group will submit a report on how to detect and deter fraud through a common repository and capacity-building in 6 months.

Maharashtra launches “Atal Aahar Yojna” for construction workers

  • The Maharashtra government has launched the “Atal Aahar Yojna” for construction workers in the state that will provide good quality and hygienic food to construction workers at a highly subsidised rate is Rs 5.
  • Under the yojana, construction workers will be provided nutritious food at their work place for just Rs five.
  • In the first phase, the target is to cover 20,000 workers.

Padma Lakshmi appointed as Goodwill Ambassador by UNDP

  • Indian-American television personality and food expert Padma Lakshmi has been appointed as the new Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 

Soumya Swaminathan appointed Chief Scientist at WHO

  • Soumya Swaminathan, a Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organisation has been named Chief Scientist of the WHO.
  • The Chief Scientist post is a newly created post in WHO.

Kummanam Rajasekharan Quits as Mizoram Governor

  • Kummanam Rajasekharan, the Governor of Mizoram, has resigned from his post. 
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has given the additional charge of the Governor of Mizoram to Prof. Jagdish Mukhi who is the incumbent Governor of Assam. 
  • Jagdish Mukhi will handle the post until regular arrangement for the post is made.

Finland’s Entire Government’s Resigns Over Flagship Healthcare Reforms Failure

  • The Prime Minister of Finland, Juha Sipila, along with his entire Cabinet, has resigned over its failure to make necessary reforms to health services and social care system of the country, its flagship programme.
  • The President of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, has approved the resignation of PM Sipila. However, the president has asked his cabinet to stay on as a caretaker government until a new one is appointed.
  • The collapse comes just few weeks before parliamentary elections are to be held. (April 14).

Kenyan Sprint Athlete Daniel Rudisha Passes Away at 73

Daniel Matasi Rudisha, a Kenyan sprint athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres passed away on March 6 after suffering heart attack. He was 73.

  • The day was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
  • On this day, women are recognized for their achievements without regard to any national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political discrimination.
