PM Modi Conferred with Maldives Highest Honour ‘Nishan Izzuddin’

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with ‘The Most Honourable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen’ award by the Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on June 8, 2019. It is the highest award to honour foreign nationals by Maldives.
  • Prime Minister Modi is the only foreign leader so far to receive the honour from the Island nation.
  • He was conferred the honor during his two-nation tour to the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
  • This was the first bilateral visit to the Maldives of an Indian Prime Minister after 2011.  

Andhra Government to launch ‘Rythu Bharosa’ scheme for farmers; to replace Annadata Sukhibhava

  • The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the launch of a new farmer support scheme, named YSR Rythu Bharosa. It will be launched on October 15, 2019. It will replace the Annadaata Sukhibhava Scheme of the previous government. 
  • It will offer investment support of Rs. 12,500 per annum per farmer. It will also free crop insurance and interest-free loans to farmers. In total Rs 50,000 will be given to a farmer in four installments of Rs 12,500. Eligibility: Farmers with land area less than 5 acres. 
  • It must be noted that the financial assistance of Rs. 15,000 per annum per farmer was provided under the Annadaata Sukhibhava Scheme.

IAF Signs Rs 300 Crore Deal With Israel to buy More Than 100 SPICE bombs

  • The Indian Air Force has signed Rs 300-crore deal with the government of Israel to buy more than 100 SPICE bombs.
  • SPICE bomb stands for Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective.
  • The newly ordered SPICE bombs are an advanced version of SPICE-2000 bombs which were used by the IAF during the air strikes in Balakot on February 26.
  • These SPICE bombs would be delivered to the Air Force in the next three months as the deal is under emergency powers.

Goldman Sachs predicts India’s GDP growth at 7.2% in FY20

  • American brokerage Goldman Sachs has predicted the Indian GDP growth to accelerate to 7.2 percent in 2019-20.
  • It has taken into account the lower oil prices, political stability and removal of infrastructure bottlenecks. 

N Gopalaswami appointed as electoral officer in BCCI

  • N Gopalaswami has been appointed as the BCCI’s electoral officer. He will supervise the elections of the BCCI and the Indian Cricketers Association.
  • N Gopalaswami is a former Chief Election Commissioner of India.

J-K Bank Chairman Parvez Ahmad removed; R K Chibber appointed interim chief

  • The Chairman of J&K Bank, Parvez Ahmad has been removed from the post by the Jammu and Kashmir government.
  • R K Chibber has been appointed as the interim Chairman and director of J&K Bank.

Telangana-based NGO ‘Deccan Development Society’ wins UN’s Equator Prize

  • A group of 6 women of the Telangana based NGO named Deccan Development Society (DDS) have bagged the United Nation’s Equator Prize for 2019 for their outstanding effort for nature-based solution to climate change and sustainable development.
  • The six women farmers are: Maisanagari Ratnamma, Begari Tuljamma, Chilkapalli Ansuyamma, Nagwar Sunandamma, Yerrolla Kanakamma, and Nadimidoddi Anjamma.
  • The will receive the award in New York during the 74th United Nations General Assembly on 24 September 2019.
  • A total of 847 nominations were received by the UN from 127 countries, of which only 22 were given the prestigious award in 2019 which showcase innovative, nature-based solutions for tackling climate change, environment, and poverty challenges.

Sweden’s Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Receives Amnesty Prize

  • The Amnesty International has awarded Sweden’s teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg with their most prestigious award ‘Ambassador of Conscience Award’ on June 7, 2019 for her leadership in the climate movement.
  • She began ‘Fridays for Future Movement’ (School strike for the climate) which is an international movement of school students who are deciding not to attend classes and instead take part in demonstrations to demand action to prevent further global warming and climate change. 

Former US President Jimmy Carter Gets George H. W. Bush Award for Statesmanship

  • The George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S. China Relations has conferred its inaugural George H. W. Bush Award for Statesmanship in U.S.-China Relations to former President of United States of America, Jimmy Carter.
  • The 94-year-old will receive the award on June 12 at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
  • The award goes to people who have made “profound contributions to the development of constructive and mutually beneficial relations” between the U.S and the People’s Republic of China.
  • Carter was president from 1977-1981.

Rihanna world’s richest female musician: Forbes

  • Singer Rihanna has been named as the “World’s Richest Female Musician” by the Forbes magazine. She has an earning of $600 million.
  • She’s overtaken Madonna and Beyonce, who previously topped the list.
