Ministry of Jal Shakti launches ‘Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan’

  • Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched ‘Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan’ under the Namami Gange Programme to raft across the entire stretch of over 2500 km of the Ganga River.
  • The ‘Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan’ is an open-water rafting and kayaking expedition on the Ganga River to be held between 10th October 2019 to 11 November 2019.
  • It will start from at Devprayag and culminating at Ganga Sagar covering the entire stretch of over 2500 Kilometers of the Ganga River.
  • The purpose is to spread the message of River Rejuvenation and Water Conservation on a massive scale.
  • The programme will cover the five Ganga basin states including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal with stops at Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Sonepur and Kolkata.
  • The expedition is led by Wing Commander Paramvir Singh from Indian Air Force. He is the only person to have swum the entire length of Ganga from Devprayag to Gangasagar in 2015

Dr Harsh Vardhan launches digital platform ‘eDantseva’ for oral health information

  • Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan has launched the eDantseva website and mobile application which is the first ever national digital platform on oral health information and knowledge dissemination.
  • The Union Health Minister also released the Braille booklet and Voice over on Oral Health Education for the visually impaired individuals, along with the oral health posters for pregnant women and children.
  • e-DantSeva contains information about the National Oral Health Program, detailed list of all the dental facility and colleges, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material and a unique feature called the ‘Symptom Checker.

Country’s first-ever e-waste clinic to be set up in Bhopal

  • The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have partnered to set up India’s first e-waste clinic in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Initially, the clinic will be a three-month pilot project and if successful, would be implemented in other parts of the country.
  • The clinic would enable segregation, processing and disposal of waste, which will be collected from both household and commercial units in exchange for a fee.
  • The CPCB will provide technical support at the unit and hazardous waste will be sent to Bengaluru for recycling.

2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded jointly to three-person for learning how cells use oxygen

  • The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to three-person namely:
    • William G. Kaelin Jr (US),
    • Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe (Britain) and
    • Gregg L. Semenza (US)
  • Reason for award: The trio has been awarded for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.
  • The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

Indian seniors win bronze medal at World Bridge Championships

  • India’s senior bridge team has won a bronze medal at the 44th World Bridge Championships held in China.
  • This is for the first time ever in the 44 years of the World Bridge Championships that the Indian team has won a medal.
  • The Indian bridge team was led by Dipak Poddar.

Ramesh Pandey selected for Asia Environmental Enforcement Award by UNEP

  • Ramesh Pandey (Indian Forest Service officer) has been selected for the prestigious Asia Environmental Enforcement Award by the United Nations Environment Programme.
  • Ramesh Pandey is posted as Chief Conservator Forests in Lucknow and Secretary, UP State Bio-diversity Board. He is known or his investigation and intelligence gathering on poachers.
  • He will receive the award on November 13, 2019 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.

Mexican Actress Yalitza Aparicio named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Indigenous Peoples

  • Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio has been named as the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Indigenous Peoples by the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay.
  • The 25-year-old actress is the first Indigenous performer nominated for a best actress honour at the Academy Awards 2019 for her performance in the film Roma, in which she speaks in an Indigenous language and in Spanish.

Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming: A Guided Journal for Discovering Your Voice” to be launched soon

  • A book authored by Michelle Obama titled “Becoming: A Guided Journal for Discovering Your Voice” will be launched in November 2019.
  • The book is a companion to her earlier book “Becoming,” which came out in November. 2018.
  • Michelle Obama is the wife of Barack Obama (Ex-US President)
