2020 Edition of Buxa Bird Festival Begins in West Bengal

  • The fourth edition of the ‘Buxa Bird Festival’ began at Buxa National Park in West Bengal on January 6, 2020.
  • The four-day festival is being attended by over 50 birdwatchers from across the country and abroad.

Mizoram Set to Organise Zo Kutpui Festival in 10 Indian States and Abroad To Strengthen Botherhood among Mizo Tribes

  • The state government of Mizoram led by CM Zoramthanga has decided to organise Zo Kutpui (festival) in about 10 states across India and countries such as US, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
  • The first edition of the festival will begin on January 9 in Vanghmun in Tripura to be held over three days and will then move to other states having significant Mizo population.
  • The imitative aims to unify and strengthen the brotherhood among various Mizo tribes living in different parts of the world.

12th Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise ”Naseem-Al-Bahr” Being Held in Goa

  • The 12th edition of the Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise ‘Naseem-Al-Bahr’ has been organised in Goa.
  • Two ships of the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), namely RNOV Al Rasikh and RNOV Khassab arrived at Mormugao Port in Goa on January 5, 2020 to participate in the exercise.
  • From India, Indian Navy ships Beas and Subhadra are participating.
  • ‘Naseem-Al-Bahr’ (which means sea breeze) is a naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the RNO, being conducted since 1993.

ISRO to Set up Human Space Flight Centre at Challakere in Karnataka

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has proposed to create India’s world-class infrastructure to house its young Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) at Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka.
  • The Rs 2,700-crore master plan is estimated to be established in three years.
  • The facility spread over 400-acre ISRO land at Challakere will be a self-contained facility having infrastructure and activities related to space travellers.
  • The first set of four astronaut candidates selected for the first Gaganyaan mission of 2022 will be trained in Russia.
  • The new facility will help to save hefty sum to use such facilities abroad and in future, whatever training and activities would be done in Russia for the Gaganyaan crew can all be done at Challakere facility.

Revised Supervisory Action Framework (SAF) for Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs): RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to rationalize the Supervisory Action Framework (SAF) for Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs) to make it more effective in bringing about the desired improvement in the UCBs as well as speedy resolution of UCBs experiencing financial stress.
  • The revised SAF envisages, initiation of corrective action by the UCB and/or supervisory action by RBI on breach of the specified thresholds (triggers) in respect of the specified financial parameters/indicators.
  • The UCB may be placed under SAF when
    • its Net NPAs exceed 6% of its net advances
    • it incurs losses for two consecutive financial years or has accumulated losses on its balance sheet
    • its CRAR falls below 9%
    • Also, actions such as imposition of all-inclusive directions under section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and issue of show cause notice for cancellation of banking license may be considered by RBI when continued normal functioning of the UCB is no longer considered to be in the interest of its depositors / public.

Bhubaneswar To Host First Khelo India University Games

  • The first edition of Khelo India University Games will be held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology University in Bhubaneswar from February 22 to March 1, 2020.
  • Over 4,000 athletes from 100 Universities across India will take part in the sports meet to be held in 17 different disciplines.
  • The meet is being organised by the Sports Authority of India, Association of Indian Universities, the Indian Olympic Association and the National Sports Federation.
  • The 17 disciplines include: archery, athletics, boxing, fencing, judo, swimming, weight-lifting, wrestling, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, rugby and kabaddi

Leo Carter of New Zealand Becomes 7th Batsman to Hit Six Sixes in an Over

  • New Zealand’s batsman Leo Carter smashed six sixes in an over to become the only 7th player in the world to script the name is the book of history.
  • The 25-year-old left-handed cricketer achieved the feat on January 6 in New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 tournament Super Smash.
  • He is also the only fourth batsman to achieve the feat in T20 cricket.
  • The other batsmen who achieved the feat in T20s, include India’s Yuvraj Singh (2007), Worcestershire’s Ross Whitely (2017) and Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai (2018).
  • Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri had achieved the feat but in first-class cicket.
  • South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes in an over during the 50-over World Cup group match against Netherlands in 2007.
  • Among these seven players, Gibbs and Yuvraj are the only two batsmen who have achieved the feat in international cricket.

India’s P Magesh Chandran lifts Hastings International Chess Congress title

  • In Chess, Indian Grand Master (GM) P Magesh Chandran won the 95th edition of the prestigious Hastings International Chess Congress in Hastings, England.
  • He remained unbeaten and finished in clear first place with 7.5 points from nine games after securing a 33-move draw in the final round against compatriot G.A. Stany
  • The 36-year old US-based Chandran has FIDE rating of 2479.
