Government forms Working Group on Industrial Policy; Head- Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra

  • The Minister of Commerce and Industry formed a Working Group on Industrial Policy in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The Working Group has 21 members and is headed by Secretary, DPIIT. Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra is the Secretary, DPIIT.
  • The Working group will be responsible to prepare the contours of a new industrial policy which will aim at making India a manufacturing hub.
  • This will be the third industrial policy after the first in 1956 and the second in 1991. It will replace the industrial policy of 1991 which was prepared in the backdrop of the balance of payment crisis. The new policy will subsume the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP).
  • The committee has representatives from eight states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

India-Bangladesh Signs 7 MoUs During Official Visit of Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to India

  • Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina was on an official visit to India on 05 October 2019 at the invitation of Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India.
  • She was also invited as the Chief Guest at the India Economic Summit organized by the World Economic Forum on 03-04 October 2019 in New Delhi.
  • Both the nations exchanged 7 bilateral MoUs/ Agreements in various fields.
  • List of MoUs/Agreements
    1. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on the use of Chattogram and Mongla ports
    2. MoU on withdrawal of 1.82 cusec of water from Feni river by India for drinking water supply, scheme for Sabroom town, Tripura, India
    3. Agreement concerning implementation of GoI Line of Credits (LOC) extended to Bangladesh
    4. MoU between University of Hyderabad and University of Dhaka
    5. Cultural Exchange Programme- Renewal
    6. MoU on Co-operation in Youth Affairs
    7. MoU on providing Coastal Surveillance System

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Approves Four-Fold Increase in Monetary Assistance for Battle Casualties from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 8 lakh

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has given in principle approval to hike the monetary assistance to Next of Kin (NoK) of all categories of Battle Casualty (BC) from present Rs 2 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.
  • The amount will be granted under Army Battle Casualties Welfare Fund (ABCWF), set up under Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (ESW), Ministry of Defence.

NHA Collaborates with Google to strengthen implementation of Ayushman Bharat Scheme

  • National Health Authority (NHA) has signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with Google to collaborate and strengthen the implementation of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) in the country.
  • Under the collaboration, Google will help in improving digital presence of PMJAY, impart training and support to NHA personnel to build on digital skills and showcase relevant content to the 50 crore entitled beneficiaries.

AIM, NITI Aayog & UNDP India Jointly Launches ‘Youth Co:Lab’ to Accelerate Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation Among Youths

  • The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI)  to launch “Youth Co:Lab” to accelerate social entrepreneurship and innovation in young India.
  • Through the Youth Co:Lab programme, young entrepreneurs and innovators will get a chance to connect with governments, mentors, incubators and investors, who will help equip them with entrepreneurial skills and in turn accelerate India’s progress on the SDGs.
  • The first phase of Youth Co:Lab will focus on six SDGs:
    • SDG 5 (Gender Equality)
    • SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
    • SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)
    • SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)
    • SDG 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production)
    • SDG 13 (Climate Action)

Singapore Tops Citizen-centric IMD Smart City Index 2019; Hyderabad Top Indian City

  • Singapore has officially been ranked as the smartest city in 2019, out of 102 cities in the world, in the first edition of the IMD Smart City Index 2019 (SCI).
  • The index has been launched by the IMD World Competitiveness Center’s Smart City Observatory in partnership with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
  • SCI is the only global index of its kind which focuses on ranking urban areas based on the perception of citizens.
  • Among India cities, Hyderabad has topped the ranking and has been positioned at 67. Other Indian cities in the index are New Delhi (68), Mumbai (78) and Bengaluru (79).

India Ranks 4th in GFP Military Strength Ranking 2019, United States Tops

  • India has been ranked as the 4th most powerful military in the world according to Global Firepower (GFP) 2019 Military Strength Ranking.
  • The ranking has been topped by United States.
  • The GFP index ranks 137 nations based on each nation’s potential war-making capability across land, sea and air with conventional weapons.
  • It uses over 55 individual factors to determine the PowerIndex (PwrIndx) score of a given nation. The top power index score is 0.0000.
  • Top 5 Nations in the GFP Index
    • United States – 0.0615
    • Russia – 0.0639
    • China – 0.0673
    • India – 0.1065
    • France – 0.1584

Novak Djokovic wins Japan Open Tennis Title 2019

  • Novak Djokovic from Serbia has won the Japan Open Tennis men’s Single title for 2019.
  • He defeated John Millman of Australia to win the title. Japan Open is a men’s tennis tournament.

Naomi Osaka and Dominic Thiem wins 2019 China Open Tennis Title

  • The 2019 China Open Tennis Tournament has ended and the list of winners are:
    • Men’s Single Title: Dominic Thiem (Austria)
    • Women’s Single Title: Naomi Osaka (Japan)
    • Men’s Double: Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Filip Polášek (Slovakia)
