India’s first global Mega Science Exhibition ‘Vigyan Samagam’ Begins in Kolkata

  • The third leg of the India’s first-ever global Mega-Science exhibition, ‘Vigyan Samagam’, to bring the world’s major Mega Science projects together, was inaugurated at the Science City in Kolkata on November 4, 2019. It will continue till December 31, 2019.
  • Vigyan Samagam is an 11-month duration multi-venue Science Exhibition planned to be held in the four cities of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and New Delhi.
  • It commenced its journey from Mumbai in May 2019, followed by Bengaluru in July 2019.
  • The final leg will be held in New Delhi at The National Science Centre from 21st January, 2020 till 20th March, 2020.

First ‘BIMSTEC Ports’ Conclave’ to be held in Vishakhapatnam, AP

  • The first-ever ‘BIMSTEC Ports’ Conclave’ will be held at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh  7-8 November 2019. The event will be inaugurated by Minister of State (I/C) for Shipping,Shri Mansukh Mandaviya.
  • The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an International Organization involving a group of seven countries namely Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal.
  • The permanent secretariat of BIMSTEC is in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The current Chairmanship of BIMSTEC is with Sri Lanka

First Ever Movement Of Container Cargo On Brahmaputra Begins

  • The first ever landmark container cargo consignment set on sail on inland waterways from Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), West Bengal to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) terminal at Pandu in Guwahati on 4 November 2019.
  • This initiative is line with Government’s focus on improving connectivity to the North Eastern Region (NER).
  • The inland vessel MV Maheshwari was flagged off carrying 53 TEUs (containers) of petrochemicals, edible oil and beverage etc on this 12-15 days voyage.
  • The 1425 km long route on which first ever containerised cargo movement will take place will be National Waterway-1 (river Ganga), NW-97 (Sunderbans), Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route and NW-2 (river Brahmaputra).
  • This is the first ever containerised cargo movement on this Inland Water Transport (IWT) route and is expected to establish the technical and commercial viability of IWT mode using these multiple waterways.

ADB Approves $451mn loan for power connectivity in Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved to provide $451-million (around Rs 3200 crore) loan to strengthen power connectivity between the southern and northern parts of the Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor (CKIC) in Tamil Nadu.
  • The total cost of the project is $653.5 million. The state government will provide the remaining amount of $202.5 million.

Indian Coast Guard conducts ReSAREX-2019 in Goa

  • The Indian Coast Guard conducted the Regional level Search and Rescue Workshop and Exercise – 2019 (ReSAREX – 2019) in Goa on November 05 and 06, 2019.
  • The Exercise comprised of search and rescue workshop and tabletop exercise conducted on November 5 and was followed by search and rescue exercise at sea on November 6.
  • Five ICG Ships, Dornier aircraft, two Chetak helicopters besides resources from other resource agencies like Captain of port, State Marine Police, Indian Mission Control Centre (INMCC) Bangaluru, Goa state administration, Goa Medical College and Marmugao Port Trust participated in this workshop cum exercise.

Sara Damnjanovic of Serbia Wins Miss Asia Global 2019 Held in Kochi

  • Serbia’s Sara Damnjanovic has been crowned the ‘Miss Asia Global 2019’ at the international beauty contest held in Kochin, Kerala.
  • Apart from this, Nguyen Thi Yen Trang of Vietnam won the ‘Miss Asia’ title and Samiksha Singh from India was felicitated with the sub-title of ‘Miss Beautiful Face’.
  • Miss Asia Global is one of the finest beauty pageants from the house of Pegasus, conducted by Ajit Ravi Pegasus, the Founder Chairman of the Miss Asia Global.

Venu Srinivasan conferred with Deming Prize

  • Venu Srinivasan (Chairman of TVS Motor Company and Sundaram Clayton) has been conferred with the Deming Prize for Individuals 2019.
  • Srinivasan becomes the first industrialist from India to be bestowed this award for his contributions in the field of total quality management (TQM)
  • The Deming Prize is the longest-running and one of the highest awards on TQM (Total Quality Management) in the world. The Deming Prize is sponsored by Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE).
  • Apart from this, Elgi Equipments (Coimbatore-headquartered) has bagged the coveted 2019 Deming Prize for Total Quality Management. It is the first globally established industrial air compressor manufacturer, outside of Japan to win this award.
