Government Decides to Revoke Article 370 and 35A in J&K; Proposes Bifurcation of State into 2 UTs

  • The Central Government has decided to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution (except for Article 370 (1)) which grants special status to Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Government has also decided to do away with Article 35A which provide special rights and privileges to the permanent residents of the state and defines permanent residents.
  • It has also been decided to bifurcate the state into two Union territories comprising of Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.
  • This announcement was made by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2019.

Centre approves Rs 4,900-crore project for interlinking Kosi, Mechi rivers

  • The Centre has approved a project worth Rs 4,900-crore Kosi-Mechi river interlinking project in Bihar.
  • This is the second major river interlinking project in the country to be approved after the Ken-Betwa project in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The project will prevent recurring floods in north Bihar and also irrigate over 2.14 lakh hectares of cultivable land in Bihar.

Regional Conference on Good Governance to be held in Jaipur in Nov 2019

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG) will organize the Regional Conference on Good Governance in Jaipur, Rajasthan on 14th-15th November 2019.
  • The theme of the event is “Strengthening State Institutes of Public Administration”.
  • 18 States/ Union Territories would be invited to participate in the Regional Conference at Jaipur. DARPG will organize the event in association with the department of Administrative Reforms, Government of Rajasthan and the Harish Chandra Mathur Rajasthan State Institute of Public Administration (HCMRIPA).

Microsoft partners with AGTB for world’s first fully digital trade bank

  • Microsoft and Publicis Sapient have partnered with Anglo-Gulf Trade Bank (AGTB) to launch the world’s first end-to-end digital trade finance bank. AGTB is headquartered in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • Publicis Sapient will function as a digital partner of the bank, utilizing Microsoft’s intelligent Cloud-based security and data solutions.
  • This has made AGTB the very first trade bank that is fully digital from the outset. Trade finance represents the financial instruments and products that are used by companies to facilitate international trade and commerce.

Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2019-20 Series-III Opens for Subscription

  • The Sovereign Gold Bonds 2019-20 (Series III) has been opened for subscription from August 5 to August 9, 2019.

Following are the major points to remember:

  • Denomination: Minimum investment in the Bonds shall be one gram with a maximum limit of subscription per fiscal year of 4 kg for individuals, 4 kg for Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) and 20 kg for trusts
  • Issue Price: Rs 3,499 per gram with settlement date August 14, 2019. (Discount of Rs 50 per gram on online payment/digital payment i.e. Rs 3,449 per gram)
  • Interest: 2.5%

Forex trading platform, FX-Retail of CCIL launched

  • Clearcorp Dealing Systems India Ltd (Clearcorp) has launched its forex trading platform, FX-Retail, for the customers of banks on August 05, 2019. ClearCorp is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clearing Corporation of India Ltd (CCIL).
  • This will provide the customers of the bank (MSMEs and Individuals) direct access to the market who has a need to purchase or sell US Dollar against the Rupee for delivery. The size of a single transaction is not allowed to exceed $5 million.
  • The registration process for customers was available from July 01, 2019.

Noel Quinn appointed interim head of HSBC Bank

  • HSBC Bank has announced the departure of its CEO, John Flint from the post saying the bank needed a change at the top to address “a challenging global environment”.
  • Noel Quinn, 57, the head of Global Commercial Banking unit at HSBC will hold the role of interim CEO till a permanent CEO is chosen. 

Vinesh Phogat wins Gold in Poland Open wrestling tournament

  • Vinesh Phogat has won a Gold Medal in the 53 kg category of Poland Open wrestling tournament held in Warsaw.
  • She defeated wrestler Roksana 3-2. This is her third consecutive gold.
  • Earlier she had won a gold at Yasar Dogu International Wrestling Tournament and Grand Prix of Spain.
