Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Bank of Canada complete first international cross-currency payment

  • The Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Bank of Canada have completed the first international cross-currency payment with digital currencies between central banks. This was done using blockchain technology between the two central banks.
  • The BoC’s experimental domestic payment network, Project Jasper, was linked up with Singapore’s Project Ubin network as part of the international cross-currency payment.

AS Kiran Kumar (Ex-ISRO Chairman) Awarded France’s Highest Civilian Honour

  • A S Kiran Kumar the Former chairman of ISRO has been conferred with France’s highest civilian award -Chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honour.
  • He has been bestowed this award for his contribution to India-France space cooperation.
  • Ambassador of France to India, Alexandre Ziegler conferred A S Kiran Kumar with the highest civilian honour of France on behalf of the President of France.

Huawei Overtakes Apple to Become Second Largest Smartphone Maker

  • Huawei Technologies Co. has overtaken Apple Inc. to claim the No. 2 spot in smartphones manufacturing in the first quarter of 2019.
  • Samsung is on the top spot.

Indian Navies Missile Destroyer INS Ranjit to be Decommissioned on May 6

  • The missile destroyer of the Indian Navy, INS Ranjit will be decommissioned at the naval dockyard in Visakhapatnam on May 6.
  • INS Ranjit was the third of the five Kashin-class destroyers built by erstwhile USSR.
  • The ship was commissioned as INS Ranjit on September 15, 1983 and has rendered service to the Navy for over 36 years.

Bajrang Punia Wins Gold in Ali Aliyev Wrestling Tournament

  • Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched the gold medal after defeating Viktor Rassadin in the finals of men’s 65kg freestyle in the Ali Aliyev Wrestling Tournament held in Kaspiisk, Russia on May 2, 2019.
  • The 25- year-old World number one, will now participate in the ‘Beat the Streets’ competition at the Madison Square Garden, New York, on May 6.

Jaipur to Host Asian Youth Women Handball Championship in August 2019

  • The Asian Youth Women Handball Championship 2019 will be held in the Pink city Jaipur from August 21 to 30, 2019.
  • The 8th edition of the event be see participation by 10 teams.
  • The tournament takes place every two years.
  • South Korea has dominated the tournament till date since its first edition in 2005.
  • Jaipur is the only second Indian city to host the event.
  • Earlier the tournament was held in New Delhi in 2015.

ICC Expands T20 Rankings to 80 Nations

  • The International Cricket Council has unveiled the new T20I team rankings table with 80 teams. Now 80 teams would be able to compete and check their progress in T20I matches.
  • Last year ICC had announced that all men’s T20 matches between member countries from January 1, 2019, will be classified as internationals. Hence the ranking of 80 teams has been prepared accordingly.

World Press Freedom Day: May 3

  • The World Press Freedom Day is observed on May 3 annually to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.
  • The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993.
  • The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2019 is Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation.

Former Kerala Finance Minister Vishwanatha Menon Passes Away

  • Veteran Communist leader and former Kerala finance minister V Viswanatha Menon passed away. He was 92.
  • Menon served as the Finance Minister from 1987 to 1991 in the CPI(M)-led LDF government headed by E K Nayanar and as Member of Parliament twice.

Star Wars Fame Peter Mayhew Passes Away

The legendary actor, Peter Mayhew, who is best known for playing Chewbacca in the “Star Wars” film series, passed away at the age of 74.
