India-Maldives Signs 5 MoUs for establishing Addu Tourism Zone in Foreign Nation

  • On 2nd February 2020, India and Maldives signed 6 MoUs, which included 5 MoUs in the field of tourism and 1 MoU for setting up bottled water plant in Maldives.
  • The MOUs were signed between the High Commissioner of India Sunjay Sudhir, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and Addu City Council.
  • Under the Tourism sector, USD 2.49 million MoUs were signed for establishing the Addu Tourism zone in five islands of Addu atoll.
  • The 6th MoU was signed to set up a bottled water plant in Hoarafushi island of Maldives.
  • The tourism zone is expected to generate local employment and enhance eco-tourism opportunities in Addu as well as enhance partnership between the two countries.

Centre Constitutes Task Force to deal with Novel Coronavirus

  • The Central Government has set up a task force to review, monitor and evaluate the preparedness regarding management of Novel Coronavirus in the country and further prevent the spread of the coronovirus infection.
  • The task force will comprise of:
    1. Dr. Harsh Vardhan (Chairman)– Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare
    2. Sh. Hardeep S. Puri – Minister of Civil Aviation
    3. Dr. S Jaishankar – External Affairs Minister
    4. Sh. G. Kishan Reddy – Minister of State for Home
    5. Sh. Ashwini Kumar Choubey – Minister of State, Health & Family Welfare
  • The decision to form the task force has been taken after a third case of novel coronavirus was detected in the state of Kerala.

Madhya Pradesh Top State in implementation of PMMVY

  • Madhya Pradesh has bagged the first position for the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).
  • The Madhya Pradesh Minister for Women and Child Development Imarti Devi and Principal Secretary Anupam Rajan received the award from the Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on 3rd February 2020 in New Delhi.
  • Also, Indore district of Madhya Pradesh has bagged the first place for better performance of the scheme.
  • As per the data, over 14 lakh 55 thousand beneficiaries have been registered under the Pradhan Mantri Matra Vandana Yojana in the state.

Indian Navy Conducts Coastal Security Exercise ‘Matla Abhiyan’ in Kolkata

  • The Indian Navy launched a unique coastal security exercise named ‘Matla Abhiyan’ in Kolkata, West Bengal to spread awareness on coastal security from 29th January to 2nd February 2020.
  • Under the exercise, two naval boats were flagged off to move along the the river Matla in the Sundarbans region up to Hemnagar.
  • This is also the international trade protocol route between India and Bangladesh.
  • During the exercise, the Navy interacted with the local community to make them aware of the coastal security and also carried out activity to understand the navigational complexities in the Sundarbans Delta.

Fitch Predicts India’s GDP Growth for FY20 at 4.6 pc and FY21 at 5.6 pc

  • US-based rating agency Fitch Ratings Inc. has projected GDP growth of India for the next financial year 2020-21 at 5.6 percent.
  • For the current fiscal 2019-20, GDP is projected at 4.6 percent.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Inaugurates Month Long Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the annual Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka on 1st February 2020.
  • Ekushey Book Fair is a month-long biggest and longest book fair of Bangladesh organised every year by Bangla Academy from February 1 to 28.
  • This event commemorates the martyrs, of the language movement, who laid down their lives on 21 February 1952 for establishing Bangla as the official language of the then East Pakistan.
  • The 2020 book fair has been dedicated to greatest Bengali of all-time and Father of the Nation ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’ on the occasion of Mujib Borsho (Mujib Year).

NASA Decommissions its Spitzer Space Telescope after Over 16 Years in Service

  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has decommissioned its Spitzer Space Telescope on 30 January 2020, after being into service for more than 16 years.
  • The Spitzer Space Telescope (SST), formerly the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), was an infrared space telescope launched in 2003 by US space agency to study the universe by detecting cosmic infrared radiation.

Pramod Agrawal Takes Charge as Chairman of Coal India Ltd.

  • A 1991 batch IAS officer Pramod Agrawal assumed charge as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Ltd (CIL) on 1st February 2020.
  • He succeeds A K Jha who on January 31, 2020.

Deepa Malik Elected President of Paralympic Committee of India

  • Indian para-athlete Deepa Malik, has been elected unopposed as President of Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) during the elections held in Bengaluru recently.
  • However, the results of the elections are subject to a pending case in the Delhi High Court.
  • The 49-year-old Deepa is the first Indian woman to win a medal at Paralympic Games.
  • She won a silver in shot put F-53 event in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
  • Other members elected for the committee includes:
    • Gursharan Singh – secretary general
    • Kavender Chaudhury and Shashi Ranjan Prasad Singh – vice presidents
    • M Mahadeva – treasurer
    • Nale Nandkishor Baburao and Kantilal Parmar – joint secretaries.

NADA Suspends Weightlifter Ramshad AR for 2 Years and Wrestler Ravinder Kumar for 4 Years

  • The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has suspended weightlifter Ramshad AR for a period of 2 years after being found guilty of violating the anti-doping rule.
  • Ramshad, winner of silver medal in the National Weightlifting Championship was found guilty of inhaling a prohibited substance by the NADA.
  • In addition to this, NADA has also banned Indian wrestler Ravinder Kumar for 4 years for failing a dope test.
