IRCTC to Compensate Rail Passengers of Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express for Delay

  • In a first of its kind offer, IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, will compensate the passengers of the new Lucknow to New Delhi Tejas Express in case of delay in the train schedule.

Rate of compensation

  • Rs 100 – Delay for over an hour
  • Rs 250 – Delay for over two hours.
  • This compensation is in addition to the Rs 25 lakh free insurance that will be given to passengers of the train.
  • The Lucknow to New Delhi Tejas Express will be flagged off on October 4, 2019 and the first commercial run will begin on October 5, 2019.
  • It must be noted that Lucknow – Delhi Tejas Express is the first train of the Indian Railways that will be fully run by its subsidiary IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) and is first step towards privatising operations of some trains.

All Public Sector Banks in India to have Uniform timings across all states from October 1

As per the new directive issued by the Indian Department of Financial Services, all the Public sector banks in India will have uniform timings across all the states with effect from October 1, 2019.

  • Under the new rule, the customer banking hours will be between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in all public sector banks from October 1.
  • However, the only exception to this rule will be Madhya Pradesh (10:30-4:30) , Mizoram (9:00-3:00) and Nagaland (9:00-3:00).
  • The timing for the state of Gujarat and Maharashtra as well as Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Sikkim and Andaman and Nicobar is yet to be decided (TBD).
  • The lunch time will be from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm, irrespective of business timings.

Govt Keeps Interest Rates of Small Savings Scheme unchanged for Oct-Dec qtr of FY20

The government has kept the interest rates on small savings schemes for October-December quarter of FY 2019-20 unchanged. The interest rate is mentioned below:

SS Mallikarjuna Rao appointed MD and CEO of Punjab National Bank

  • SS Mallikarjuna Rao has been appointed as the new CEO and MD of Punjab National Bank. He has been appointed for a period till 18.09.2021.
  • He will replace Sunil Mehta as the MD and CEO. PNB is under a process of three-way amalgamation with Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and United Bank of India.

Kyrgyz lawyer, Azizbek Ashurov UN’s Nansen Award

  • Human rights lawyer, Azizbek Ashurov from Kyrgyzstan has won the Nansen Award of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
  • Due to the efforts of Azizbek Ashurov, Kyrgyzstan has become the world’s first country to end statelessness.

Surjit Bhalla appointed as executive director for India at IMF

  • Government of India has appointed Economist Dr. Surjit S Bhalla as Executive Director for India at International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • He has been appointed for a term of 3 years. Last year in December, Bhalla had resigned as a part-time member of EAC-PM (Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister).

International Day of Non-Violence: October 2

  • Every year, October 2 is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence, to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi and also spread the message of non-violence.
  • On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly, voted to establish 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence.
  • The year 2019 marks 150th birth anniversary of the global peace icon who led India to independence. He was born on 2 October 1869, Porbandar in Gujarat.
