India Was the Biggest Recipient of Funds from ADB in 2018

  • India was the biggest recipient of funds from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the year 2018.
  • The country received USD 3 billion in sovereign loans in 2018 from ADB.
  • This is the highest level of assistance since sovereign operations began in the country in 1986.
  • The multilateral funding institution is committed to grant sovereign loans in excess of USD 3 billion in 2019 as well.

Green Number Plates now Mandatory For All-Electric Vehicles

  • Government of India has made it mandatory for  Electric Vehicles to have number/license plates in Green Color. The font color for private cars will be white while that for taxis/commercial vehicles will be yellow.
  • The green number plates will be the fifth type of number plate. Electric vehicles will be given special priviledges like free parking, free entry in congested areas and a concessional toll on highways.

UK becomes first parliament to declare climate emergency

  • The UK Parliament has passed a declaration for Environment and Climate Emergency on May 01, 2019. Hence the Parliament of the UK has become the first parliament, or the UK has become the first country to pass a declaration on climate emergency.
  • The was a lot of pressure from the opposition Labour leaders for “rapid and dramatic action” to protect the environment for generations to come.
  • The fight for this Climate Emergency was lead by a group called Extinction Rebellion.
  • What does Climate Emergency mean: It means that from now climate and the environment would be at the very centre of all government policy, rather than being on the fringe of political decisions.

Former Srilankan Skipper Kumar Sangakkara Named First Non-British President of MCC

  • The former captain of Sri Lanka, Kumar Sangakkara, has been named as the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He will take up his role on the year long post October 1, 2019.
  •  With this, he will be the first non – British person to be appointed to the post since the foundation of the club.
  • Marylebone Cricket Club was founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord’s cricket ground in St John’s Wood, London, England.

Rapper Drake Breaks Record for Most Billboard Music Awards

  • Rapper Drake broke the record for the most Billboard Music Awards wins by taking home 12 prizes in different categories in the 2019 edition on May 1.
  • Now the overall Billboard Music Awards won by Drake has gone up to 27 awards.
  • With this, the Canadian born rapper Aubrey Drake Graham has surpassed the record earlier held by American singer Taylor Swift who has won 23 Billboard Music Awards till date.

UN designates JeM chief Masood Azhar as global terrorist

  • UN Security Council has listed Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. This comes after China lifted its hold on a proposal to blacklist Masood Azhar.
  • India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin made this announcement on Twitter.
  • The designation by UNSC will make subject Masood Azhar to assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo.

Noted theater artist and film personality in the Kannada film industry, Master Hirannaiah passed away due to illness. He was 84


World Tuna Day: May 2

  • The World Tuna Day is held on 2 May since 2017 to highlight the importance of Tuna fish to the marine ecosystem and the global economy and raise awareness about proper conservation and management to prevent them from crashing.
  • The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized the Day in December 2016.
  • Tuna is a saltwater fish comprising of some 15 different species across five genera.
