AYUSH Ministry Launches App to Locate Yoga Centres & Instructors

  • The Ministry of AYUSH has launched a map-based location application named “Yoga Locator” to help people in locating yoga events, centres as well as certified yoga instructors within the preferred radius of their vicinity.
  • The app was launched during the two-day Yoga Mahotsava 2019, a Curtain Raiser for International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2019, to sensitize the masses for celebration of IDY 2019 (June 21).
  • The theme for IDY 2019 will be ‘Yoga for Heart’.
  • The app will give information about yoga activities happening in the surrounding area throughout the year and help to locate yoga centres as well as yoga instructors in the preferred region. The yoga instructors will be able to register themselves through the app and reach out to a maximum number of people.
  • Another App named ‘Bhuvan App’ has also been launched. It has been designed in collaboration with ISRO to provide geo time location and documentation.

Ex-President Pratibha Patil Receives Mexico’s Highest Civilian Honour

  • Former President of India, Pratibha Patil, was conferred with the “Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca” (Order of the Aztec Eagle), the highest civilian award of Mexico given to foreigners, on June 1, 2019.
  • 85-year-old Patil is the first Indian women to have served as the President of India (2007-2012).
  • She is also the first Indian female and only the second Indian to get the Mexico’s civilian award, the first being late President S Radhakrishna.

ONGC India’s most profitable PSU in 2018-19

  • India’s top oil and gas producer, ONGC was the country’s most profitable public sector company in 2018-19. Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) reported a 34% increase in its 2018-19 fiscal net profit to Rs 26,716 crore.
  • Second in the list is  Indian Oil Corp (IOC) with a net profit of Rs 17.274 crore in 2018-19. Last year IOC was the top PSU.

Elephanta Festival of Art and Culture Begins in Mumbai

  • The two-days Elephanta Festival of Art and Culture began in Mumbai on June 1, 2019 on the Elephanta Island, located adjacent to the Elephanta Cave, a World Heritage Site.
  • It is one of the most prominently celebrated festivals in Mumbai organized annually by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) since 1989 to promote Mumbai tourism and culture.

Mohana Singh Becomes First Female Fighter Pilot to Fly Hawk Jet

  • Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh has become the first woman fighter pilot to fly by daytime on a Hawk advanced jet aircraft. 
  • She achieved the feat at the Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal on May 30, 2019 as she landed after undertaking 4 aircraft combat sortie.
  • This was the last syllabus sortie to become fully operational pilot on the Hawk Jets.
  • Earlier, Flight Lt Bhawana Kanth became the first daytime woman fighter pilot to fly a MiG-21 Bison.

SpiceJet Chief Ajay Singh Elected to IATA Board

  • Ajay Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director of low cost carrier SpiceJet, was elected to the board of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on June 2, 2019 during the IATA annual general meeting in Seoul.
  • The new board of IATA would be chaired by German airline Lufthansa Group’s Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr.
  • Other board members include Air Canada President and CEO Calin Rovinescu, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce and Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker.
  • In March 2019, SpiceJet became the first Indian carrier to become member of the IATA, a grouping of around 290 airlines.

Nayib Bukele Sworn in As President of El Salvador

  • Nayib Bukele took over as the President of the Central American country of El Salvador on June 1, 2019.
  • The 37-year-old succeeds Salvador Sanchez Ceren.

Anton Aditya Subowo Re-elected the President of Badminton Asia

  • Anton Aditya Subowo from Indonesia has been re-elected as the President of Badminton Asia for another four-year term. 
  • Moosa Nashid of Maldives has been elected as the Secretary-General while Jassem Kanso from Lebanon has been re-elected for the post of Treasurer.
  • The body has also elected seven Vice-Presidents which includes Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma (India), Wang Wei (China), Kim Jong Soo (Korea), Tirta Juwana Darmadji (Indonesia), Chang Kuo-Tso (Chinese Taipei), Ali Almarri (Kuwait), and Dr Sawsan Haji Mohammad Taqawi (Bahrain).

Chile’s Puerto Williams Overtakes Argentina’s Ushuaia to Become World’s Southernmost City

  • Puerto Williams, a small settlement on Navarino Island in Chile has claimed the title of the world’s southernmost city.
  • This achievement was made after the Chile authorities upgraded to the category of Puerto Williams from “hamlet” to “city”.
  • Until now, the title was held by Ushuaia, city in Argentina.
  • The southernmost city in the world is mainly a slogan used for tourism to attract visitors to a city.

Veteran Industrialist & Tea Tycoon BM Khaitan Passes Away

  • Veteran industrialist and owner of Williamson Magor Group, Brij Mohan Khaitan passed away. He was 92. He was globally known as the ‘evergreen tea man of India’.
  • Williamson Magor Group deals in dry-cell battery (Eveready Industries), tea (McLeod Russel), engineering services (McNally Bharat Engineering) and other unlisted firms
  • McLeod Russel is an Indian tea company and currently the largest tea growing company in the world.
