India’s First Fruit Train Flagged Off From Andhra Pradesh to JNPT

  • In another major milestone achievement for the Indian Railways, a first-of-its-kind ‘Fruit Train’ was flagged off from Tadipatri Railway Station in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai, from where the consignment will be exported to Iran.
  • This is the first time that an entire train carrying a load of 980 tonnes of locally grown bananas is being sent to the gateway port (JNPT) for export.
  • These bananas will be exported under the brand name ‘Happy Bananas’.
  • The initiative will help save both time and fuel as compared to road transportation, collaboration between companies and local farmers, provide market linkage and ensure higher prices with a regular increase in income year-on-year.

Mumbai’s Iconic ‘Kala Ghoda Arts Festival’ Begins from 1st Feb

  • The 21st edition of the 9-day Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (KGAF) 2020, one of the biggest open street arts and cultural festival of India, has begun in Mumbai from 1st February 2020.
  • The Kala Ghoda Festival is one of the most-awaited art and cultural festivals which takes place in the Kala Ghoda area of South Mumbai since 1999 in early February and attracts a wide range of crowd from all across the world.
  • The Festival is organised by the Kala Ghoda Association, a non-profit organisation that states its objectives as “physically upgrading the Kala Ghoda sub-precinct and making it the Art District of Mumbai”.
  • The theme for 2020 KGAF is “PAST FORWARD.”
  • The 2020 edition of the event has been organised across 14 categories including dance, food, children activities, theatre, music, movies and films, literature, street events, visual arts, heritage walks, stalls, workshops, urban design and architecture, and stand up comedy.
  • This year’s festival is different from the rest of the editions as it has invited general public to raise funds for it through a crowdfunding platform, “Ketto”.

Waheeda Rehman to be Conferred Kishore Kumar Samman for 2017-18

  • Veteran yesteryear actor Waheeda Rehman will be conferred the Madhya Pradesh government’s National Kishore Kumar Samman for the year 2017-18 on 4th February 2020 at her residence in Mumbai.
  • The award carries cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and citation and is presented for outstanding achievement in cinema.
  • The 82-year-old actor was to be presented the prestigious honour on 13 October 2019, coinciding with the death anniversary of singing legend Kishore Kumar, but could not be given as the actor was unwell.

Veteran Hindi Writer Vinod Shukla Bags First Mathrubhumi Book of the Year 2020 Award

  • Noted Hindi poet-novelist and Sahitya Akademi honouree Vinod Kumar Shukla has bagged the inaugural Mathrubhumi Book of the Year 2020 award for his translated book “Blue Is Like Blue”, which deal with common people and their daily struggles..
  • The stories in “Blue Is Like Blue” has been translated into English by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra and Sara Rai.
  • The 83-year-old Shukla is regarded the finest living writer in Hindi. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel “Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi” in 1999.
  • The award is given by Kerala based Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi to the best fictional work released in the previous year and carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a plaque and a certificate.

Novak Djokovic and Sofia Kenin Clinches Australian Open 2020 Tennis Tournament

  • The 2020 Australian Open was the 108th edition of the annual Australian Open tennis tournament and the first Grand Slam of the year. It was held from 20 January to 2 February 2020.
  • The winners are as follows:
    • Men’s Single: Novak Djokovic (Serbia) beat Dominic Thiem (Austria)
    • Women’s Single: Sofia Kenin (US) beat Garbine Muguruza (Spain)
    • Men’s Double: Rajeev Ram (US) / Joe Salisbury (UK)
    • Women’s Double: Tímea Babos (Hungary) / Kristina Mladenovic (France)
    • Mixed Double: Barbora Krejčiková (Czech Republic) / Nikola Mektić  (Croatia)

Anjali Saraogi and Awadh Yadav wins Kolkata Full Marathon 2020

  • Lucknow-based runner Awadh Narayan Yadav and Anjali Saraogi from Kolkata has clinched the top honours in the Kolkata Full Marathon 2020 in men’s and women’s categories respectively on 2nd February 2020.
  • Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar was the brand ambassador of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Kolkata Full Marathon 2020.
  • Anjali Saraogi clocked 3:24.02 to win the title for the third consecutive year, and in the process became the first runner to clinch a hat-trick of titles at the Kolkata Full Marathon.
  • Awadh clocked a timing of 2 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • The annual Kolkata Full Marathon 2020 was held in four different categories including the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, Timed 10k Run and the 5k Fun Run and over 12,000 runners participated in the event from across the country.

World Wetlands Day: February 2

  • Every year the World Wetlands Day is observed globally on February 2, since 1997, to raise awareness about the value of wetlands for humanity and the planet.
  • The theme for 2020 WWD is ‘Wetlands and Biodiversity.’
  • The day marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971 when a small group of environmentalists signed an international agreement in the Iranian city of Ramsar.

Noted Odia Poet Rabi Singh Passes Away

  • Eminent Odia poet Rabi Singh passed away following a prolonged illness.
  • He was 89.
  • He was popularly known as “Biplabi Kabi” (revolutionary poet) for his patriotic writings.
