Govt launches app ‘Consumer App’ for filing consumer complaints

  • Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has launched a mobile app named ‘Consumer App’ for consumer complaint registration and redressal.
  • Consumers can register their complaints via the app. The complaints which are simple in nature will be resolved within 15 days, while complicated ones will be redressed in 60 days.
  • It must be noted that this is an additional platform that the government has created for filing consumer complaints. Consumer helpline and consumer courts will continue to play their role.

India’s largest ‘charkha’ made of waste plastic inaugurated in Noida

  • Union Minister Smriti Irani has inaugurated India’s largest ‘charkha’ (spinning wheel) made of used plastic waste in Noida.
  • The ‘charkha’ has a dimesnsion of 14 ft 20 ft 8ft and is made of 1,250 kg of used plastic and symbolises Gandhi’s dream of Swadeshi (self sufficing and self reliance).

64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, 2019 Held in Uganda

  • The 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), 2019 was held from 22 to 29 September 2019, in Kampala, Uganda.
  • The main conference theme was: ‘Adaption, engagement, and evolution of parliaments in a rapidly changing Commonwealth’.
  • Indian parliamentary delegation was represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Validity of PIO Card Extended upto March 31, 2020

  • The Government of India has extended the timeline for conversion of all Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cards to Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to March 31, 2020 instead of earlier deadline of September 30, 2019.
  • This means that the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) will accept all Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cards (including handwritten PIO cards), along with valid foreign passport, as valid travel document for exit from/entry into India, till March 31, 2020.
  • However, the extension is subjected to the condition that if in the meantime, any deadline is notified by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) thereby making handwritten PIO cards invalid, then PIO cardholders may have to obtain appropriate visa from Indian Missions/Posts.
  • OCI card is a smart card to facilitate quicker immigration clearance at Immigration Check Posts.

RBI appoints Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as new administrator for PMC Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has superseded the Board of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Ltd. upon which RBI recently placed directions under section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • RBI has appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the administrator of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Ltd. with all the powers of the board. RBI has restricted the withdrawal at Rs 10,000 for the customers of PMC Bank.
  • Joy Thomas, who has been suspended as the managing director of PMC Bank. PMC Bank HQ- Mumbai.

IAU Names Minor Planet After Indian Musical Maestro Pandit Jasraj

  • On September 23, 2019, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially declared that a minor planet [2006 VP32 (number -300128), traversing the cosmos between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter] has been named after the doyen of Indian classical vocal music, Pandit Jasraj.
  • This honour has made Pandit Jasraj, the first Indian musician to have a planet named after him.
  • IAU allots a permanent number to every minor planet as their discoveries are confirmed. ‘Panditjasraj’ minor planet has been given the number 300128, which is the musical maestro’s date of birth in reverse order (28/01/30).

Indian Fencer Bhavani Devi Clinches Silver in Tournoi Satellite Fencing Competition in Belgium

  • Indian fencer C. A. Bhavani Devi has won the silver medal in the women’s sabre individual category in the 2019 Tournoi satellite competition (World level), held at Ghent, Belgium.
  • The 26-year-old Bhavani from Tamil Nadu lost 15-10 to Anna Bashta of Azerbaijan in the final.

International Day of Older Persons: October 1

  • The International Day of Older Persons is observed each year on October 1 to raise awareness about issues affecting the elderly and appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
  • The United Nations General Assembly adopted the day on December 14, 1990.

International Coffee Day: October 1

  • International Coffee Day is celebrated on 1 October every year to celebrate millions of people across the world who do hard work to create and serve the beverage in the consumable form such as from farmers, roasters, baristas, and coffee shop owners etc.
  • The theme 2019 of the day is ‘Coffee’s future needs you’.

World Vegetarian Day: October 1

  • World Vegetarian Day is observed annually on October 1 globally to raise awareness about the ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.
  • The day was initiated by the North American Vegetarian Society in Scotland in 1977 during the World Vegetarian Congress.
