SEBI bars NSE from accessing the securities market for a period of six months

  • Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has barred National Stock Exchange (NSE) from accessing the securities market directly or indirectly for a period of six months starting from April 30, 2019. It means NSE cannot launch a new derivative product for the next six months.
  • This has been done as NSE had not exercised the requisite due diligence while putting in place the TBT architecture. There were some chances of fraud due to server co-location issue.
  • Tick-by-Tick (TBT) is a data feed, which provides information regarding every change in the order book on the NSE.
  • SEBI has also directed NSE to disgorge an amount of Rs.624.89 crores to the Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF) created by SEBI under Section 11 of the SEBI Act.

CPWD forms committee to bring ‘Safety Manual’ of dept; Head- K M Soni

  • The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has constituted a 10-member committee to bring out ‘Safety Manual’ of the department. The committee is headed by Additional Director General (ADG) K M Soni.
  • It will submit a report within 2 months. The ‘Safety Manual’ aims at ensuring safety of engineers and workers working in various projects of the agency working under Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.

Centre Constitutes Committee to implement the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)

  • The Union Environment Ministry has constituted a committee to implement the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The Secretary, Union Environment Ministry will chair the committee. It will have its headquartered in New Delhi
  • NCAP aims to reduce particulate matter (PM) pollution by 20%-30% in at least 102 cities by 2024.
  • The other members of the committee will be Joint Secretary (Thermal)- Ministry of Power; Director-General- The Energy Resources Institute (TERI), and Professor Sachidananda Tripathi- Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K).
  • The NCAP is a five-year action plan with 2019 as the first year and there would be a review every five years.

Indo-French Joint Naval Exercise “Varuna-19” Commences off Goa Coast

  • The 17th edition of the Indo-French joint naval exercise, “Varuna-19”, began on May 1 off the Goa coast.
  • The exercise will be conducted in two phases.
  • The first part of the exercise, Varuna 19.1, is the harbour phase that will be held off the Goa coast from May 1-10, 2019.
  • The second part, Varuna 19.2, is the sea phase which is scheduled to be held at the end of May 2019 in Djibouti.

  • The awarded Goldman Environmental Prize is awarded every year to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world’s six geographic regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America by the Goldman Environmental Foundation headquartered in San Francisco, California.
  • It is also called the Green Nobel.

Former Chief Justice of Madras, Kerala High Courts B Subhashan Reddy Passes Away

  • B Subhashan Reddy, the former Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts passed away due to ill-health.
  • He was 76.
  • He had also served as the judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and Chairman of State Human Rights Commission and Lok Ayukta.

International Workers’ Day: May 01

  • The International Workers’ Day is held annually on May 1 to honour the contributions of the labourers or working class people.
  • This day is also known as Workers’ Day, Labour Day and as May Day.
  • The theme of Labour Day 2019 is ‘Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement’.
  • India celebrated the first Labour day in the year 1923 and the day is referred nationally as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din.
