Important Cabinet Approvals on February 28, 2019

Given below is the list of Memorandum of Understandings of India with various countries approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi 

  • Argentina – Cooperation in the field of Medical Products Regulation
  • Tajikistan – Cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy
  • Norway – Undertaking non-intrusive Geological Surveys and Investigations 
  • USA – Access tip line reports on Missing and Exploited Children 
  • UK – Cooperation in Weather and Climate Sciences

HRD Ministry launches STARS scheme worth Rs 250 crore

  • The Ministry of Human Resource and Development has launched a project named STARS’ or Scheme for Translational and Advanced Research in Science, to fund science projects.
  • The outlay of the project is Rs 500. It aims to cover around 500 projects. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore will coordinate the project.
  • The STAR Scheme was launched on National Science Day i.e February 28, 2019.

7th Guinness Book of World Record created by DEPwD in Gujarat

  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has created the “7th Guinness Book of World Record” on February 28, 2019 at Bharuch, Gujarat.
  • The DEPwD implanted ‘Modern Artificial Limbs (Legs)’ on 260 Divyangjans within eight hours.
  • Six World Records in other categories have already been created by DEPwD. 
  • The announcement was made during the National Conference on “Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS)” organised in New Delhi on March 01, 2019.

Moody’s predicts India’s GDP growth rate in 2019, 2020 at 7.3%

  • Moody’s has predicted the GDP growth rate for India at 7.3% for both 2019 and 2020. 

India and ADB sign $926 Million Loan Agreement for Mumbai Metro Rail Project

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India has inked loan agreement worth USD 926 Million to operationalize two lines for the Mumbai Metro Rail System.
  • The loan agreement will ease the travel for millions of commuters each day and help provide a cleaner and less congested city. 

Amazon to launch Project Zero to fight product counterfeit

  • Amazon will launch an initiative named “Project Zero” to get rid of counterfeit products on its website.
  • Under the project, Amazon will allow the brands to directly flag and delete fake listings themselves.
  • At present companies need to forward a request to Amazon if they spot fake versions of their products.

CBDT task force for new direct tax law gets 3 months extension

  • A task force set up under the CBDT to draft a new direct tax law and replace the existing Income Tax Act for which the deadline was February 28, 2019 has been given a three-month extension till 31 May, 2019.
  • The head of the task force is Akhilesh Ranjan.

Ravneet Gill takes charge as MD, CEO of Yes Bank

  • Ravneet Gill has taken charge as its MD and CEO of Yes Bank with effect from March 01,  2019.
  • His appointment as MD/CEO of Yes Bank was announced in January 2019.
  • He has replaced Rana Kapoor who demitted the office as the MD/CEO on January 31, 2019. In this meanwhile, Ajai Kumar was the interim MD and CEO of the bank.

Zero Discrimination Day: March 01

  • The Zero Discrimination Day is celebrated annually on March 1 since 2014 by the UN and other international organisations.
  • The theme for Zero Discrimination Day 2019 is ‘Act to change laws that Discriminate’.
  • The day aims to ensure right to equality, inclusion and protection of all people without any discrimination in their law and policies to live a full life with dignity regardless of any barriers.

Oscar winning Music composer Andre Previn passed away at 89

  • Four time Oscar-winning music composer Andre Previn passed away at the age of 89.
  • He won the Oscar for “Gigi”, “Porgy & Bess”, “Irma la Douce” and “My Fair Lady”
