First Session of 17th Lok Sabha To Begin From June 17; Budget on July 5

  • The first Parliament session of the 17th Lok Sabha will begin from June 17, 2019 and will continue  till July 26, 2019.
  • The Rajya Sabha will begin its sitting from June 20 onwards.
  • The joint sitting of the two houses of Parliament will be addressed by President Ram Nath Kovind on June 20.
  • The first two days of the session will be dedicated for oath-taking of the new members.
  • Maneka Gandhi, who has been appointed as the temporary speaker, will administer the oath of office to all the newly elected lawmaker.
  • The new permanent Speaker will be elected on June 19.
  • The Economic Survey will be tabled on 4th of July 
  • Modi 2.0 government’s first full budget will be presented on July 5.
  • Nirmala Sitharaman, who is the first full-time woman Finance Minister of India, will present the Union Budget.

Government Forms New ‘Jal Shakti’ Ministry

  • The Modi Government has come up with a new ministry called the “Jal Shakti”.
  • This ministry has been formed by reorganising the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, along with Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
  • The Ministry of Jal Shakti will be headed by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
  • Rattan Lal Kataria is the minister of state.
  • Jal Shakti Ministry will look over issues ranging from international and inter-states water disputes, the Namami Gange project to clean the river, its tributaries and sub-tributaries and provide clean drinking water.

Cabinet Approves Initiative to Control Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) & Brucellosis to Support the Livestock Rearing Farmers

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved an initiative to control Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis to support farmers associated with the animal husbandry sector.
  • The initiative has been allocated total outlay of Rs. 13,343 crores to fully control these diseases amongst the livestock in the country in the next 5 years and subsequently eradicate these diseases.
  • Under FMD, vaccination coverage will be provided to 30 crore bovines (cows-bulls and buffaloes), 20 crore sheep/goat and 1 crore pigs at an interval of six months’ along with primary vaccination in bovine calves.
  • The Brucellosis programme will cover 100 percent vaccination coverage of 3.6 crore female calves.
  • So far the initiative was implemented on cost sharing basis between the Central and State Governments but now the central Government will bear the entire cost of the programme to ensure complete eradication of these diseases and better livelihood opportunities for all the livestock rearing farmers in the country.

Assam Govt Raises Parental Income Limit Under Fee Waiver Scheme

  • Assam has enhanced the annual income limit of parents whose children are eligible for the state government’s admission fee waiver scheme up to Post Graduate level.
  • Under the revised scheme, students whose parent’s annual income is less than Rs 2 lakh will be eligible for waived admission fees. Earlier this limit was Rs 1 lakh. 
  • Students whose parents are working in government, semi-government, state/central government undertakings, are not eligible for the scheme.
  • All provincialized, government colleges and 5 universities in the state are incorporated under the scheme.

Sonia Gandhi Re-Elected As Chief of Congress Parliamentary Party

  • Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA), has been elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party on June 1, 2019 at a meeting of the newly-elected Congress Lok Sabha MPs in New Delhi.
  • Her name was proposed by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh
  • Ms. Gandhi will now have to pick the party’s floor leader in the Lok Sabha.
  • The floor leader sets the agenda for his party in the House, decides its parliamentary strategy and coordinates with other Opposition parties and the government on behalf of his party.

WHO Awards Rajasthan Health Department for Tobacco Control

  • The Medical & Health Department of the Rajasthan government has received the ‘World No Tobacco Day Award 2019’ on May 31 in New Delhi from the World Health Organization (WHO) in recognition of its achievements in the field of tobacco control.
  • 33 institutions and individuals across the world were selected for the award by WHO.
  • From South-east Asian region, India has total 2 selections.
  • While one is the Rajasthan government, the other is Prof Raj Kumar, director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, New Delhi.

Indian-Origin Anita Bhatia Appointed UN Women Deputy Executive Director

  • Indian-origin Anita Bhatia has been appointed as the Deputy Executive Director of UN-Women, the UN body focused on women empowerment and gender equality, on May 30 by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
  • She will serve as the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) for Resource Management, Sustainability and Partnerships

Former Arsenal Winger Jose Antonio Reyes Passes Away

  • The Spanish professional footballer, Jose Antonio Reyes Calderon, passed away on June 1, 2019 in a car crash. He was 35.
  • He made his professional debut for Spanish football club Sevilla and further played for clubs like England’s Arsenal, Spain’s Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, Poland’s Benfica among others.

World Milk Day: June 1

  • World Milk Day is observed on June 1 each year since 2001 to recognize the importance of milk as a global food and bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector
  • It was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
  • The World Milk Day 2019 Theme is “Drink Milk: Today & Everyday.”

Global Day of Parents: June 1

  • The Global Day of Parents is observed on the June 1 annually every year to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship. 
  • The Day was proclaimed by United Nations in 2012.
  • The 2019 Global Day of Parents theme is “Honor Your Parents!”
