Ministry of Jal Shakti launches “Jal Shakti Abhiyan”

  • Union Jal Shakti Minister, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, has launched the Jal Shakti Abhiyan. It is a campaign for water conservation and water security.
  • The campaign will run through citizen participation during the monsoon season, from 1st July, 2019 to 15th September, 2019.
  • Phase 2 will be run from 1st October, 2019 to 30th November, 2019 for States receiving the North East retreating monsoons. The focus of the campaign will be on water-stressed districts and blocks.
  • Teams of officers from the central government will visit and work with district administration in 1592 water stressed blocks in 256 districts, to ensure five important water conservation interventions. These are: 
    • Water conservation and rainwater harvesting,
    • Renovation of traditional and other water bodies/tanks,
    • reuse,
    • bore well recharge structures,
    • watershed development and intensive afforestation.

Deadline for National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam extended till July 31

  • The Centre has given one-month extension to complete the enumeration process for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam by July 31.
  • The National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the state of Assam has been taken as the exercise to enumerate citizens in Assam. The exercise aims at identifying illegal immigrants in the state of Assam that borders Bangladesh.
  • When the draft NRC was published on July 30 last year, there was a huge controversy over the exclusion of 4 million people from it. The draft NRC included the names of 29 million people out of the total 32.9 million applications. The names of over a lakh more people were also excluded in a list published last month.

First Ever India International Cooperatives Trade Fair (IICTF) to be Held in New Delhi in October 2019

  • The First Ever India International Cooperatives Trade Fair (IICTF) will be held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 11 –13 October, 2019.
  • It is a unique initiative to take farmers, artisans & other members of cooperatives directly to the global trade arena for doubling the farmers income and achieving the goals set under the Agriculture Exports Policy 2018.

  • Karnam Sekar has taken over the charge new Managing Director and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank from July 01, 2019. He has replaced R Subramaniakumar.
  • Karnam Sekar is the Former MD of Dena Bank

ITBP DIG Aparna Kumar Becomes First Civil Servant to Scale North America’s Mount Denali

  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Aparna Kumar has successfully scaled the highest peak of North America, Mount Denali.
  • This was the 7th summit of Aparna in her ‘7 Summits’ challenge.
  • The 2002 batch UP Cadre IPS officer, Aparna has now become the first civil servant and IPS officer to achieve this rare feat.
  • In January 2019, she had become the first IPS and ITBP woman officer to successfully reach the South Pole.

Amazon tops as world’s most valuable brand: BrandZ Report

  • Amazon has topped the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brand for 2019. The brand value of Amazon saw an increase of 52% in 2019 at $ 315,505 million from $ 207,594 million in 2018.
  • Apple is at the second rank followed by Google at 3rd.
  • Three Indian companies have found place in the ranking. HDFC Bank has been ranked at 60th and LIC is ranked at 68th. TCS is ranked at 97.

Airtel completes merger of Tata Teleservices’ consumer mobile business

  • Tata Teleservices and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) have merged into Bharti Airtel and Bharti Hexacom (Airtel) with effect from effective from July 1, 2019.
  • As part of the merger, Airtel will absorb Tata Teleservices’ CMB operations in 19 telecom circles — 17 under TTSL and 2 under Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra).
  • The merger includes transfer of all the customers and assets of Tata Teleservices CMB to Airtel.

‘Whispers of Time’ book authored by Dr Krishna Saksena released

  • Dr Krishna Saksena has launched her new book titled ‘Whispers of Time’ at India International Centre in New Delhi.
  • The book was unveiled by Smriti Zubin Irani, Minister of Textiles and Minister of Women and Child Development.

Max Verstappen Wins Austrian Grand Prix 2019

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix for the second consecutive year. He is the first non-Mercedes driver to win a race in 2019.
  • Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second and Valtteri Bottas finished third for Mercedes.

Indian pro boxer Vaibhav Yadav wins WBC Asia title

  • Indian pro boxer Vaibhav Yadav became the WBC Asia silver welterweight champion after defeating Thailand’s Fahpetch Singmanassak in the title bout held in Pattaya, Thailand.
  • The fight was conducted by the Asian Boxing Council and approved by the World Boxing Council (WBC).

2nd GST Day Observed on 1 July 2019

  • India is observing July 1, 2019 as the GST Day to mark the second anniversary of the new indirect tax regime, Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was rolled out in the intervening night of June 30 and July 1 in 2017.
  • The government will also introduce the new return system on a trial basis on July 1, 2019. It will come into force from 1 October 2019 on a mandatory basis. 

National Doctors’ Day: July 1

  • The National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on July 1 in India to honour the legendary physician and emphasise on value of doctors in our lives and to offer them our respects by commemorating one of their greatest representatives
  • It also commemorates the birth anniversary of the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962.
  • The theme of National Doctor’s day 2019 is “Zero tolerance to violence against doctors and clinical establishment”. 

Chartered Accountants Day: July 1

  • The Chartered Accountants’ Day is held on July 1st every year in India. It is also known as ICAI Foundation Day.
  • The day marks the foundation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on July 1, 1949.
  • ICAI is among the oldest professional institutions in the country and also the second largest professional accounting and finance body in the world in terms of members.

Former India Cricketer Rakesh Shukla passed away

  • Former India leg-spinner Rakesh Shukla passed away at the age of 71 years. He had represented Delhi and Bihar in First-Class cricket and earned his Test cap against Sri Lanka in 1982. 
  • He has played 121 first-class matches and has taken 295 wickets and made 3798 runs.

Odia film producer Keshav Rout passes away

  • Odia film producer Keshav Chandra Rout passed away at the age of 68 years.
  • Apart from producing several popular Odia films, Rout had also made a number of television serials.
