IAF Aircraft AN-32 Successfully Flight Tested with Indigenous Bio-Jet Fuel

  • On 31 Jan 2020, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully flight tested the take off and landing of its aircraft AN-32, powered with a 10% blend of Indian bio-jet fuel.
  • The aircraft took-off from Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh and and its performance was validated at Chandigarh Air Base prior to undertaking the operational flight to Leh.
  • This is the first time that both engines of the aircraft were powered by the bio-jet indigenous fuel and demonstrates IAF’s capabilities to absorb newer technology, while sponsoring indigenization.
  • Bio-jet fuel is produced from non-edible ‘Tree Borne Oils’, grown and procured from the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh state.

Flame-Throated Bulbul ‘Rubigula’ Unveiled as Official mascot for National Games 2020 in Goa

  • The 36th edition of the National Games of India will be held from 20 October to 4 November 2020 in Goa.
  • The official mascot for the Goa 2020 National Games was unveiled on 01 February 2020 by the Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant in the presence of Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju.
  • The Flame-Throated Bulbul under the name ‘Rubigula’ has been unveiled as the mascot for the event.
  • The Flame-Throated Bulbul is the state bird of Goa.
  • The Goa 2020 National Games will host 37 sports disciplines across 24 venues in Goa.
  • 36 states and union territories with more than 12,000 athletes participating.

M Ajit Kumar Appointed as New Chairman of CBIC

  • The Central government has appointed M Ajit Kumar as the Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on 31 January 2020.
  • M. Ajit Kumar, a 1984 batch IRS officer, is presently a member of CBIC.

Indian-origin Arvind Krishna to Succeed Ginni Rometty as IBM Chief

  • Indian-origin Arvind Krishna has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of American multinational IT company International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).
  • The 57-year-old will succeed long time CEO Ginni Rometty.
  • He will take over the charge on 6th April 2020.

Mohammad Allawi Named as new PM of Iraq

  • The President of Iraq Barham Saleh has named former Communication Minister, Mohammad Allawi as the country’s new Prime Minister on 1st February 2020.
  • The 65-year-old succeeds Adel Abdel Mahdi, who resigned two-months ago due to public protest.
  • He would run the country until early elections are held.

R A Sankara Narayanan, MD & CEO of Canara Bank Retires

  • R A Sankara Narayanan, the Managing Director and CEO of public sector lender Canara Bank has retired from the post on 31st January 2020, upon his superannuation.
  • He took charge as MD & CEO of Canara Bank on 15 April 2019.

Abidali Neemuchwala Steps Down as CEO and MD of Wipro

  • The chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director (MD) of Wipro, Abidali Z Neemuchwala has quit the post, giving “family commitments” as the reason behind the decision.
  • The 52-year-old will continue to hold office until a successor is appointed.
  • Neemuchwala joined Bengaluru-based Wipro in April 2015 as the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Social Activist and Marathi Feminist writer Vidya Bal Passes Away at 84

  • Maharashtra-based veteran social activist and Marathi feminist writer/editor, Vidya Bal passed away in Pune. She was 84.
  • She was known particularly for her fight for women’s rights and equality with that of men in India.

Sahitya Akademy Winning Eminent Punjabi Novelist Dalip Kaur Tiwana Passes Away at 84

  • Noted Punjabi novelist and short storyteller Dr Dalip Kaur Tiwana has passed away due to health issues. She was 84.
  • Dr Tiwana was the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademy awarde.
  • She returned her Padma Shri award against increasing intolerance in the country in 2015.

Noted Punjabi writer Jaswant Singh Kanwal Passes Away

  • Eminent Punjabi writer, novelist and Sahitya Akademi Awardee Jaswant Singh Kanwal passed away after a brief illness at his native village in Moga district.
  • He was 101.
  • Kanwal was bestowed Sahitya Akademi Fellowship award for his 1996 book ‘Pakhi’ (Hand Fan) and
  • He also received the Sahitya Akademi award for Taushali Di Hanso in 1998.
