- The Defence Acquisitions Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has approved indigenous construction of six submarines worth Rs 40,000 crore for the Indian Navy.
- The project will be implemented under the strategic partnership model.
- It will rope in private firm to build the submarines in India in partnership with foreign defence manufacturers.
- This is the second project to be implemented under the strategic partnership model. The first project being the acquisition of 111 utility helicopters for the Navy at a cost of over Rs. 21,000 crore.
- Additionally, DAC has also approved acquisition of approximately 5,000 Milan anti-tank guided missiles for the Army.
