PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate world’s tallest ‘Statue of Unity’ on October 31

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a 182 m high statue of Sardar Patel, described by the Gujarat government as the world’s tallest. 
  • The Statue of Unity is 182 m from the ground and 240 m from the river base of Narmada. It has been called ‘Statue of Unity’ by the Gujarat government.
  • The inauguration of the statue will be done on Vallabhbhai Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary

Govt sets up panel of secretaries into look e-commerce issues

  • The government has set up a group of secretaries for looking into all the issues of e-commerce sector.
  • Government has appointed DIPP Secretary Ramesh Abhishek as the head of this panel.

Insurance industry to touch $280 bn by FY20: ASSOCHAM Study

  • The Indian insurance industry is expected to grow to $ 280 billion by 2019-20 according to an Assocham-APAS study.
  • Insurance penetration in the country reached 3.7 per cent in 2017 from 2.71 per cent in 2001.

Poet Satrughna Pandav To Receive 39th ‘Sarala Puraskar’

  • Noted Odia poet Satrughna Pandav will receive the prestigious Sarala Puraskar for his poetry work ‘Misra Dhrupad.’The 39th edition of Sarala Puraskar will be presented to Pandav on October 26.
  • Two other eminent personalities of Odisha will also be honoured for their contribution in the field of music and art.
  • Pandeet Umesh Chandra Kar will be awarded the ‘Ila Panda Sangeet Samman’ and Binod Moharana will receive the ‘Ila Panda Chitrakala Samman’.

Arpinder becomes first Indian to win medal in IAAF Continental Cup

  • Triple jumper Arpinder Singh became the first Indian to win a medal in the IAAF Continental Cup. He won a bronze medal.
  • The 2018 IAAF Continental Cup is being held in Ostrava Czech Republic.

Naomi Osaka defeats Serena Williams to win Women’s US Open Singles title

  • Naomi Osaka became the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam Women’s singles title. She defeated Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 to win the 2018 US Open Women’s Single.
