‘Prabuddha’ Scheme of Karnataka to help SC/ST students study abroad

  • Karnataka state government has launched a ‘Prabuddha’ Scheme under which Meritorious SC/ST students heading overseas for higher education will now have their entire cost covered by the state government.
  • Under this scheme the government plans to fund at least 400 students annually at a cost of Rs 120 crore.
  • Under the new scheme, students whose annual family income is below Rs 8 lakh will get 100% coverage, including tuition fee, travel and accommodation. Those with a family income of Rs 8-15 lakh will get 50% coverage and those above Rs 15 lakh will get 33% coverage.

Kannur Airport Inaugurated; Kerala Becomes 1st State to Have 4 International Airports

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu jointly inaugurated the Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) on December 9, 2018.
  • The first flight from the airport, was flagged off to Abu Dhabi.
  • With this, Kerala has become the first Indian state to have a total of four international airports.
  • The three other international airports in Kerala are in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

Indo-Russian Navy Exercise INDRA NAVY 2018 Commences in Visakhapatnam

  • The 10th edition of bilateral maritime exercise INDRA NAVY – 2018 between Indian Navy and Russian Federation Navy kicked off at Visakhapatnam on 09 December and will continue till 16 December 2018.
  • The first edition of the exercise was held in 2003.

Joint Indo- Russian Air Exercise Aviaindra 2018 To be held in Jodhpur

  • The bilateral joint exercise between the Indian Air Force and Russian Federation Aerospace Force (RFSAF), AVIAINDRA-2018 is scheduled to be held at Air Force Station Jodhpur from 10-21 Dec 2018.
  • The inaugural IAF-RFSAF Ex AVIAINDRA was conducted in 2014.

IAF Conducts Combined Guided Weapon Firing Exercise -CROSS BOW 18

  • The Indian Air Force successfully conducted Exercise CROSS BOW-18, combined guided weapons firing exercise of Surface-to-Air Missiles from the Air Force Station at Suryalanka in Andhra Pradesh.
  • This was a first of its kind Exercise undertaken by the Indian Air Force in which firing of four different class of missiles – AKASH, SPYDER, OSA-AK-M and IGLA was successfully carried from December 4-8, 2018

Vanessa Ponce de Leon wins Miss World 2018 title

  • Miss Mexico Vanessa Ponce de Leon, 26, has won the Miss World 2018 title in Sanya, Hainan island, China.
  • She became the 68th Miss World after beating her closest rivals that include Uganda’s Quiin Abenakyo to become the Miss World 2018.
  • Vanessa Ponce was crowned by last year’s winner Manushi Chhilar of India in the coastal city of Sanya.

4 Indian Among Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women in the World List 2018

  • Four Indian women have made in the 2018 The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list by Forbes.
  • They are : IT stalwart Roshni Nadar-Malhotra, biotechnology pioneer Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, media mogul Shobhana Bhartia and actor Priyanka Chopra
  • The 15th edition of the list has been topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel who retains the top spot for the eighth consecutive year, and 13 times in total.
  • She is followed by U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May (2) and International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde (3), General Motors CEO Mary Barra (No. 4), and Fidelity Investments CEO Abigail Johnson (No. 5).

Sunil Mittal Bags ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ Honour

  • Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman, Bharti Enterprises, has been bestowed with the ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ by ESCP Europe Business School.
  • He is the first Indian to be honoured with this distinguished recognition in ESCP Europe’s near – 200 years history.
  • ESCP Europe is the world’s first business school and was founded in 1819 by a group of economic scholars and businessmen. It is one of the premier global institutions, for his innovative entrepreneurship and contribution towards philanthropy in the field of education.

Goa’s Prathamesh Maulingkar wins Mister Supranational 2018

  • Goa’s Prathamesh Maulingkar has become the first Indian to win the title of Mister Supranational 2018.
  • The 27-year-old defeated 39 other contestants from all over the world in the final round to win the 2018 title at the third edition of the pageant that took place in Krynica-Zdrój, Poland.
  • Mister Supranational Poland Jakub Kucner was adjudged first runner up while the second runner up title was won by Mister Supranational Brazil Samuel Costa.

Khelo India Youth Games-2019 to be held in January

  • The second edition of Khelo India Youth Games will be held in Pune in January 2019.
  • The inaugural event of Khelo India, which has been rechristened as Khelo India Youth Games, was held only for the Under-17 age group, while the Khelo India Youth Games 2019 will also have Under-21 athletes participating in 18 disciplines.
