Centre Approves 10% Reservation for Economically Backward in General Category

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to give 10 percent reservation in jobs and for admission in higher educational institutions for the economically backward section of the general category. 
  • The benefit of this reservation will be availed by those whose annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and have up to five acres of Agricultural land.
  • Additionally, the person’s residential house should be below 1000 sq ft, and the residential plot should be below 100 yards in a notified municipality area and below 200 yards in a non-notified municipality area. 
  • The government will amend the Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution for implementation of the decision.

Kerala to set up country’s largest Integrated Startup Complex on 13.5 acres

  • Kerala is setting up the country’s largest Integrated Startup Complex, which will house a Maker Village, Bionest, and BRINC, the country’s first international accelerator for Hardware startups, among other facilities.
  • It is set up by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and the complex is spread over 180,000 sq ft in Technology Innovation Zone (TIZ).
  • Over a 100 startup companies in various stages of growth are already operating in the three incubators functioning within the facility

Coimbatore Police launches ‘Police-E-Eye’ Mobile App for traffic regulation

  • The Combaitore city police has launched a mobile application named ‘Police-E-Eye’  which will enable the public to take photographs of traffic rule violators and upload them to the police.
  • Public can take pictures which, with time and location, would reach the senior police officials.
  • Based on this, the traffic department would issue photo challans to the violators’ place to collect the fine amount.

GDP growth to be 7.2% in 2018-19: CSO

  • Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.2 per cent in 2018-19 as per Central Statistics Office (CSO). 
  • The growth in 2017-18 was 6.7 per cent.

Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank amalgamated with Madhya Bihar Gramin Bank in Bihar;

  • Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank (Sponsor Bank- UCO Bank) has been amalgamated with Madhya Bihar Gramin Bank (PNB).
  • The consolidated entity has been rechristened as Dakshin Bihar Gramin bank, with headquarters at Patna. PNB is its sponsor bank.
  • With this the total number of RRBs in the country has come down from 56 to 53. Nabard has suggested a road map which proposes to bring down the number of RRBs to 38.

Bandhan Bank to acquire Gruh Finance in merger deal

  • Bandhan Bank has agreed to acquire housing finance firm Gruh Finance through a share swap deal.
  • Under the merger cooperation agreement, shareholders of Gruh Finance will get 568 shares of Bandhan Bank for every 1,000 shares held.
  • Gruh Finance is promoted by the country’s largest mortgage firm HDFC Ltd.

Go Pink Cabs – Women-only taxi service launched at Bengaluru Airport

  • Women-only taxi service has been launched at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport). The service is run by Go Pink Cabs.
  • These Special cabs will bedriven by women, for women. It is aimed at strengthening safety and security for women passengers.
  • It is jointly launched by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and is the only women-only taxi service.
  • The pink cab service will be functional 24 hours and priced at Rs 21.50 per km during the day and Rs 23.50 per km at night.

Sheikh Hasina Takes Charge as Bangladesh PM for 4th term

  • Bangladeshi politician Sheikh Hasina took oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the third consecutive term on January 7, 2019.
  • It is Hasina’s fourth term in office. She was first elected prime minister in 1996 and then again in 2008 and 2014. 
  • The 71-year-old Awami League chief, Sheikh Hasina, has been sworn in as the 10th Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
  • She is the longest serving prime minister in the history of Bangladesh.

Sultan Muhammad V steps down as Malaysia’s king

  • Malaysia’s 15th King, Sultan Muhammad V, resigned from Kingship on January 06, 2019.
  • This is the first time a king has abdicated in the since Malaysia gained independence from Britain in 1957. Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, will serve as acting king before a new monarch is selected by the Council of Rulers.
  • In Malaysia a king is referred as Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
  • Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, with a unique arrangement where the throne changes hands every five years between the rulers of the nine Malaysian states headed by centuries-old Islamic royalty.

Mexican defender Galindo retires from professional football

  • Mexican defender Aaron Galindo has announced his retirement after 16 years as a professional footballer. He played for Spain’s Toledo and Hercules.

  • The 76th Golden Globe Awards were announced on 6 January 2019 in California.
  • The award honored the best in film and American television of 2018, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
