Jaisalmer to host India Baja 2018

  • India Baja 2018, the Indian edition of the greatest challenge of all extreme motorsport competitions in the world, will be organised from August 17-19 among the dunes of Jaisalmer.
  • Top Indian contender will get a direct entry to the pinnacle of all off-road races in the world — the Dakar Rally of 2020.

Indo – Thailand Joint Exercise Maitree 2018 begins in Thailand

  • Exercise Maitree is a joint military exercise between Indian Army and Royal Thai Army which will be conducted from 06 to 19 August 2018 in Thailand.
  • Exercise Maitree will contribute immensely in developing mutual understanding and bonhomie between the two armies in order to counter terrorism.

Google officially releases Android P, calls it Android 9 Pie

  • Google is officially announcing its next major version of Android.
  • Called Android 9 Pie, the update is ready to roll out in its stable form and will be available for download today on Pixel devices. Android Pie is the ninth major release of Android and the successor to last year’s Android Oreo.
  • Devices from OEMs who were part of the beta program with Google will get their update before the end of fall this year.

National Handloom Day

  • The National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7 since 2015 to generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry and its contribution to the socioeconomic development of the country in general and to promote handlooms, increase income of weavers and enhance their pride in particular.
  • The date August 7 has been chosen due to its special significance in India`s history; it was on this day that the Swadeshi Movement was launched in 1905.
  • Besides, every year artisans and weavers are presented with ‘Sant Kabir’ awards to promote their handiwork and Indian crafts.

DMK Chief M Karunanidhi Passes Away

  • DMK Chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi passed away after prolonged illness in Chennai. He was 94-year old.
  • The leader had served as the chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu for five separate terms in the 1969–2011 period besides being 13 times MLA.

Senior Congress leader RK Dhawan passes away

  • Senior Congress leader R. K. Dhawan passed away in Delhi at the age of 81.
  • According to media reports, Dhawan worked as the personal secretary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1962 to 1984 and reportedly shared cordial relations with the Gandhi family.
