Shri Nitin Gadkari Launches Bidder Information Management System and Bhoomi Rashi – PFMS Linkage Portals

  • The Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari launched Bidder Information Management System (BIMS) and Bhoomi Rashi and PFMS linkage initiative.
  • The two IT initiatives of the Road Transport & Highways Ministry are aimed at expediting pre construction processes relating to bidding and land acquisition respectively.
  • BIMS is aimed at streamlining the process of pre-qualification of bidders for EPC Mode of contracts for National Highway works with enhanced transparency and objectivity. 
  • Bhoomi Rashi, the portal developed by MoRTH and NIC, comprises the entire revenue data of the country, right down to 6.4 lakh villages.
  • Integration of Public Financial Management System (PFMS) with Bhoomi Rashi is one of the key functionalities to facilitate payment related to compensation for land acquisition to all the beneficiaries directly through the Bhoomi Rashi system. PFMS is a web-based online software application developed and implemented by the Office of Controller General of Accounts (CGA). to facilitate sound public financial management system for Government of India (GoI).

President Kovind Inaugurates ‘Festival of Democracy’ in Thiruvananthapuram

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the ‘Festival on Democracy’ to mark the conclusion of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Kerala Legislative Assembly in Thiruvananthapuram on August 6, 2018.

International Conference on Sustainable Growth through Material Recycling Held in New Delhi

  • The Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways & Ganga Rejuvenation, Shri. Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the NITI Aayog’s International Conference on “Sustainable Growth through Material Recycling: Policy Prescriptions” at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi.
  • The day long conference aimed at identifying policy prescriptions for the development and growth of material recycling in India towards creating more jobs, reduce dependence on exports, protect the environment and take steps towards adopting circular economy concepts.

51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers meet held in Singapore

  • The 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting concluded in Singapore.
  • Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong chaired the meeting.

PayNearby app partners with YES Bank for BBPS payments

  • Fintech startup Nearby Technologies has partnered with Yes Bank for payments on Bharat Bill Payment System(BBPS). BBPS is a bill payment platform of NPCI.
  • Nearby Technologies enables lakhs of retailers and merchants to offer bill payment service to their customers on the PayNearby app .

Airtel ties up with Telecom Egypt for global submarine cable systems

  • Telecom major Bharti Airtel has signed a strategic partnership with Egyptian operator Telecom Egypt (TE), which would allow Airtel to use the Middle East North Africa (MENA) Submarine Cable and TE North cable systems.
  • The partnership would help Airtel to serve the growing demand for data services, particularly in markets across South Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Ramon Laguarta to succeed Indra Nooyi as the CEO of Pepsi Co

  • Indian origin business executive Indra K. Nooyi will step down as the Chief Executive of PepsiCo, Inc. in October. Ramon Laguarta has been elected as the new CEO.
  • Nooyi will continue to be the chariman of Pepsi Co. until early 2019.

Ajay Data, first Indian in ICANN

  • The nominating committee of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has selected Ajay Data, Founder & CEO of Data XGen Plus and a global leader in email linguistic services, as a new council member of Country Code Supporting Organisation (ccNSO).
  • Ajay Data is the first Indian to have been selected as a member of ccNSO and will be representing India at a global level. He will be the custodian of Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands as a member of ccNSO.

Biography of Naveen Patnaik released

  • A biography of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik encompassing his over two decades of political life was released.
  • The book is titled “Naveen Patnaik” and is authored by Ruben Banerjee. He is the Editor of Outlook.

Twinkle Khanna’s book “Pyjamas are Forgiving” to be out soon

  • Actress-turned-author Twinkle Khanna is all set to come up with her third book “Pyjamas are Forgiving” in September. 
  • This would be her third book after “Mrs Funnybones” and “The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad

German player Mario Gomez retires from international football

  • Veteran German striker Mario Gomez announced his retirement from international football 
  • The 33-year-old, who made his debut for Germany in 2007, scored 31 goals in 78 international appearances.

Netherlands Crowned World Champions in Women’s Hockey

  • Netherlands have been crowned the world champions in 2018 Hockey Women’s World Cup held in London, England.
  • Defending champions the Netherlands won the tournament for a record eighth time after defeating Ireland 6–0 in the final, who claimed their first ever World Cup medal.
  • Spain won the third place match by defeating Australia 3–1 to claim their first ever World Cup medal as well.
  • India finished the tournament at the 8th spot out of 16 nations.

India Beats Argentina to Lift 2018 Cotif Cup

  • The Indian Under-20 football team created history as they defeated Argentina, 2-1 in their final match of the 2018 Cotif Cup in Spain.

‘Chef of the century’, Joel Robuchon, dies at 73

  • Joel Robuchon, the world’s most-starred Michelin chef has died at 73. He was from France.
  • Robuchon was hailed as one of four “chefs of the century” by the Gault & Millau industry bible in 1990.

Noted Kannada film producer Bhakthavatsala dies at 84

  • Noted film producer and former chairman of Indian Film Chamber of Commerce M Bhakthavatsala died due to age-related ailments at 84. 
  • He shot to fame by producing Kannada films like ‘Sandhyaraga’ and ‘Samskara’ among others. Bhakthavatsala served as president of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce for seven years and was the only Kannadiga to chair the Indian Film Chamber of Commerce.
