PM Modi lays foundation stone of various development projects in Palamu, Jharkhand

  • The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi was on a day long visit to Palamu, Jharkhand on 5 January 2019 to inaugurate six irrigation projects.
  • He laid the foundation stone of Rs 2,391.36 crore Mandal Dam project that will be built on North Koel river under Barwadih block in Latehar district. The work on Mandal dam began in 1972, but has been stalled since 1993.
  • Other projects for which the foundation stone was laid includes:
    • Sone canal pipeline irrigation project worth Rs 1,169.28 crore
    • Renovation and lining work of Bater Vier Irrigation Project
    • Renovation of Bain Banki Reservoir Project
    • Renovation and lining work of Anjanva Reservoir Project
    • Renovation and lining work for Brahmani irrigation project (in Chakradharpur block of West Singhbhum district). 
  • The minister also witnessed the e-Grih Pravesh of 25,000 beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana.

PM Modi Inaugurates Several Development Projects in Baripada, Odisha

  • Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Baripada, in Odisha on January 5, 2019 where he inaugurated and laid foundation stone of several projects worth around Rs 5,399 crore
  • Some of the projects inaugurated includes:
    • Conservation and development of Rasika Ray Temple, and Excavated Structure at Ancient Fort Haripurgarh; 
    • Balasore-Haldia-Durgapur section of the Paradip-Haldia-Durgapur LPG pipeline of IOCL;
    • Multi Modal Logistic Park at Balasore;
    • 6 Passport Sewa Kendras (Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jajpur, Aska, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal) and
    • Doubling of Naranpur-Basantpur and Chillikidara-Sagadapata line.
    • PM Modi also flagged off the second passenger train from Tatanagar to Badampahar.
  • He laid the foundation stone for three national highway projects of nearly 200 km including: Four-laning of Rimuli-Koida section of NH-215 (new NH-520), four laning of Koida-Rajamunda section of NH-215 (new NH-520) and four-laning of Singara-Binjabahal section of NH-6 (new NH-49) at a cost of Rs 3,318 crore.

Hardeep S Puri Launches Swachh Survekshan 2019

  • The fourth edition of the annual cleanliness survey of Urban India, Swachh Survekshan 2019, was officially kicked off by the Minister of State (I/C), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Hardeep S Puri on 4 January 2019.
  • The survey this year will be conducted across 4,237 towns and cities between January 4 – 28, 2019.
  • It will be a completely digital and paperless survey and is planned to be completed in a record time of 28 days.
  • The survey indicators/questionnaire will carry a total of 5000 marks as compared to 4000 marks in Swachh Survekshan 2018.
  • Swachh Survekshan aims to create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a better place to live in.

Shri Prakash Javadekar inaugurates 27th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair

  • Union Minister for Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the 27th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair 2019 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on January 05, 2019.
  • Guest of Honour/Guest Participants: Sharjah, UAE
  • Guest of Honour for the event: Mr Ahmad bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman, Sharjah Book Authority
  • Theme of the event: ‘Books for Readers with Special Needs’

Maharashtra govt announces sops for farmers under the Atal Solar Krishi Pump Yojana

  • Maharashtra Government has announced freebies for farmers that enroll for its Atal Solar Krishi Pump Yojana (ASKP). It includes two LED bulbs, a DC fan and a mobile charging socket as freebies.
  • The State has launched the Atal Solar Krishi Pump Yojana (ASKP) for farmers with a subsidy of up to 95 per cent on solar pumpsets. The State plans to install one lakh solar pumps.

Vadodara to host 8th international marathon on January 06

  • Vadodara, Gujarat will to host the eighth international marathon on January 06, 2019.
  • Over one lakh participants have registered themselves for the event that will be flagged off by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
  • The marathon will be held across four categories: 42 km, 21 km, 10 km and 5 km.

Book titled “A Crusade against corruption” by Manohar Manoj launched

  • A book titled “A Crusade against corruption” that is authored by Manohar Manoj was launched. It was launched by Vice-Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh.
  • The author has been closely monitoring the issue of corruption from various angles. His observations and findings have come into the form of this book.

Vijay Mallya first businessman to be declared ‘fugitive economic offender’

  • Vijay Mallya has become the first businessman to be declared FEO under the provisions of the new Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018.
  • A special court in Mumbai has declared absconding  Vijay Mallya a fugitive economic offender (FEO) on a plea of the Enforcement Directorate.
  • Special judge MS Azmi declared Mallya an FEO under Section 12 of the Act. Mallya’s properties can now be confiscated by the government.

‘ORGANICS AND MILLETS-2019’ International Trade Fair to take place in Bengaluru

  • The Organics and Millets-2019 International Trade Fair will be held from 18th to 20th January 2019 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This is the second edition of the event.
  • It is being organized by the Government of Karnataka’s Department of Agriculture. The flagship event will revolve around the theme: K-Source
  • International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA) is the knowledge partner and co-organizer for the event.

Anantha Padmanabhan elected AIGJDC Chairman

  • Anantha Padmanabhan, has been elected as the Chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (AIGJDC) for a period of two years.
  • AIGJDC is the national apex body of the gems and jewellery industry.

Govt amalgamates three regional rural banks

  • The government has amalgamated three Regional Rural Banks — Punjab Gramin Bank, Malwa Gramin Bank and Sutlej Gramin Bank — into a single RRB with effect from January 1.
  • As per the proposal, Malwa Gramin Bank and Satlej Gramin Bank have been merged into Punjab Gramin Bank. The merged entity will be sponsored by Punjab National Bank. These banks were operational in Punjab.
