Ukraine Launches Joint Military Drills with NATO and US

  • Ukraine has launched joint military exercises named Rapid Trident with the United States and a string of other NATO countries.
  • The annual military exercises will take place in the western Ukrainian village of Starychi from September 3-15, 2018. It will involve some 2,200 soldiers from 14 countries.

Indo-Kazakhstan Joint Exercise KAZIND 2018 To Begin From Sept 10

  • The Indo-Kazakhstan Joint Army Exercise ‘KAZIND’ will be conducted between the Indian and Kazakhstan Army from 10 to 23 September 2018 in Otar region, Kazakhstan.
  • This is the third joint military exercise between the two countries. The second edition of the exercise was held in India last year.
  • The aim of the fourteen days exercise is to build and promote bilateral Army to Army relations and exchange skills and experiences between Kazakhstan Army and the Indian Army. The exercise will also serve as a platform for exchange of drills and procedures.

India To Participate in Tsunami Mock Drill ‘IOWave18’

  • India is among 24 Indian Ocean nations taking part in the two-day tsunami mock drill known as IOWave18 on September 4-5, 2018.
  • The Exercise Indian Ocean Wave 2018 (IOWave18) will involve evacuation of over 1.25 lakh people from coastal areas in over half a dozen coastal states including Odisha, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat and Goa..
  • The major Indian ocean-wide drill is being organised by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, which coordinated the setting up of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) in the aftermath of December 2004 tsunami. 
  • The purpose of exercise is to increase tsunami preparedness, evaluate response capabilities in each state and improve coordination throughout the region, besides testing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and communication links at all levels of the warning chain.

Indian Navy wins KAKADU-18 Cup

  • The Indian Navy has won the coveted KAKADU Cup 2018 in Australia as it participated in a multilateral maritime KAKADU exercise involving 27 navies.
  • KAKADU exercise is a multilateral maritime engagement hosted by the Royal Australian Navy with support from the Royal Australian Air Force.
  • INS Sahyadri took part in the exercise.

Conference on E-Mobility in Indian Railways Begins in New Delhi

  • The Conference on E-Mobility in Indian Railways began in New Delhi to discuss the strategies regarding future of mobility in the country.  
  • The conference aimed to discuss ways to utilize modern technology and artificial intelligence for optimal power utilisation for clean energy utilization in Indian Railways

International Women Entrepreneurs Summit Begins in Nepal

  • The Vice President of Nepal Nanda Bahadur Pun inaugurated the International Women Entrepreneurs Summit 2018 being held in Kathmandu, Nepal from September 3, 2018,.
  • The theme of 3-day event is “Equality begins with Economic Empowerment”.
  • The event has been organised by the South Asian Women Development Forum. The delegates from the SAARC, ASEAN, EU, Africa, Arab countries and China participating in the summit.
  • The main objective of the summit is to bring together achievers, women business leaders, professionals, international service providers, resource organizations, experts, government representatives and other stakeholders for empowering women in all areas including social, political and economic through discussions and collaborations.

Govt Approves Proposal to Increase Wages of Artisans by Over 36 Percent

  • The Government has approved a proposal to increase wages of artisans by over 36 percent, from Rs 5.50 paisa per hank to Rs 7.50 paisa.
  • The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), MSME Ministry, has approved the proposal for hike in wages to Khadi spinners along with payment of government subsidy (modified market development assistance (MMDA)) with effect from August 15, 2018. 

Suresh Prabhu Launches Technology Initiatives for Coffee Stakeholders

  • Minister for Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu has launched a mobile app named Coffee Connect for India coffee field force and Coffee KrishiTharanga – digital mobile extension services for coffee stakeholders.
  • The mobile app Coffee Connect has been developed to ease the work of field functionaries and improve the work efficiency of the whole process of the field activities like digitization of Coffee Growers & Estates with Geo Tagging, collecting the Plantation details and also bring transparency in the activities of the extension officers and officials, subsidy disbursement and real time report generation.
  • The Coffee KrishiTharanga services are aimed at providing customized information and services to increase productivity, profitability, and environmental sustainability.

Arif Alvi elected new Pakistan president

  • Dr Arif Alvi, was elected as the new President of Pakistan. He is one of the founding members of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
  • In Pakistan, the President is considered as a symbol of the federation and head of the state and exercises all powers on the recommendations of the prime minister.

Asia Index launches S&P BSE Private Banks Index

  • Asia Index Pvt Ltd announced the launch of S&P BSE Private Banks Index  to measure the performance of private banks.
  • Asia Index Pvt Ltd is a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BSE Ltd.
  • The index is calculated in Indian Rupees and US Dollar and is calculated real-time by BSE.

ADB Unveils First Scorecard to Boost Access to Trade Finance

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has launched the Trade Finance Scorecard – Regulation and Market Feedback, a new tool to address market gaps stemming from the unintended consequences of global measures to fight money-laundering and terrorism.
  • The scorecard is based on feedback from industry leaders and regulators and will complement existing tools such as the Financial Action Task Force’s recommendations against money laundering and terrorist financing.

Om Prakash Mitharval wins gold ISSF World Championships

  • Indian shooter Om Prakash Mitharval has won gold in 50m pistol in ISSF World Championships in Changwon (South Korea).
  • The ongoing championship is the first qualifying event for the 2020 Olympics.
  • Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela became the first set of Indian shooters to secure quota places for the Olympics by winning a silver and finishing fourth respectively in the women’s 10m air rifle event.
