The Global Multidimensional Poverty Index Report 2018 published by UNDP

  • UNDP has released 2018 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) in partnership with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
  • The key findings related to India are:
    • In India, 271 million people moved out of poverty between 2005/6 and 2015/16, but the country still has the largest number of people living in multidimensional poverty in the world (364 million people). Even so, India has cut its poverty rate from 55% to 28% in ten years.
    • Among states, Jharkhand had the greatest improvement.
    • Bihar is still the poorest state in 2015/16, with more than half of its population in poverty. In 2015/16, the four poorest states – Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh – were still home to 196 million MPI poor people.

First General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to take place in New Delhi

  • The first General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) will take place on October 2 in New Delhi. 
  • The Ministerial level Assembly will be held in Greater Noida on the next day.
  • The Founding Conference of the ISA was jointly hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in New Delhi on 11 March 2018. 

SEBI releases revised KYC norms for FPIs

  • Market Regulator SEBI has published revised know-your-client (KYC) norms for foreign portfolio investors (FPI) providing relief to the foreign entities.
  • Here are the major points:
  • Contributions by NRI/ OCI/ RI including those of NRI/ OCI/ RI controlled Investment Manager should be below 25% from a single NRI/ OCI/ RI and in aggregate should be below 50% to corpus of FPI.
  • Periodic KYC review: FPIs shall be subject to KYC review as and when there is any change in material information / disclosure. The KYC review (including change in BOs / their holdings) should be done based on risk categorization of FPIs. In case of Category III and Category II FPIs from high risk jurisdictions KYC review should be done on yearly basis.

Irdai raises minimum driver insurance cover to Rs 15 lakh

  • Insurance regulator Irdai has raised the minimum insurance cover for owner-driver to Rs 15 lakh for a premium of Rs 750 per annum.
  • Currently, the capital sum insured (CSI) under this section for motorised two-wheelers and private cars/commercial vehicles is Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively.
  • The regulator directed all general insurers to provide a minimum CSl of Rs 15 lakh under Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover for owner-driver under Liability Only to all classes of vehicles at the premium rate of Rs 750 per annum for annual policy.

‘Village Rockstars’ becomes India’s official entry to Oscars 2019

  • “Village Rockstars”, an Assamese movie, has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars 2019. The movie has been directed by Rima Das.
  • An all-India jury constituted by Film Federation of India (FFI) under the chairmanship of Kannada producer Rajendra Singh Babu made the announcement.

India Settle for Silver in Asian Team Snooker Championship

  • India settled for the silver medal at the Asian Team Snooker Championship in men’s double event with a 3-2 loss to Pakistan in the final held in Doha.
  • Pakistan’s ace cueist Babar Masih accompanied by teammate Mohammad Asif outclassed India’s Pankaj Advani and Malkeet Singh to win the game.

World Women’s Boxing Championships From November 15 in Delhi

  • The AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2018 will be held in New Delhi in November 13-25.
  • India hosted the tournament last time in 2006 and remains the best for the country in terms of performance.
