Shaktikanta Das Appointed as the new RBI Governor

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has appointed Shaktikanta Das, former Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of three years.
  • He is the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and succeeds Urjit Patel who stepped down from the position ahead of his tenure.
  • Das is a 1980 batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu cadre and former economic affairs secretary from 2015 to 2017.
  • He is currently a member of the 15th Finance Commission of India, and the government’s representative at the Group of 20 summits. 

Myntra CEO Ananth Narayanan Quits

  • The Myntra’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ananth Narayanan has resigned from the post and Flipkart executive Amar Nagaram will head online fashion retailer.
  • The firm is also set to abolish the post of CEO for Myntra. 
  • Myntra is a fashion-focused e-commerce arm of Flipkart (owned by Walmart Inc). 
  • Besides, key Myntra leaders such as chief revenue officer Mithun Sundar and human resources head Manpreet Ratia have also resigned.

Ministry of Agriculture Launches Online portal “ENSURE” To Connect with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)

  • Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a portal ENSURE – National Livestock Mission-EDEG to connect the subsidy payment under livestock sector to Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
  • The online portal “ENSURE” (https://ensure.nabard.org) has been developed by NABARD and operated under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries.
  • Under the Mission’s component called Entrepreneurship Development and Employment Generation (EDEG), subsidy payment for activities related to poultry, small ruminants, pigs etc. through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) goes directly to the beneficiary’s account and the information related to beneficiary and processing of application can be made readily available.

India ranks 11th in the Climate Change Performance Index 2019;

  • India has been ranked at 11th in the Climate Change Performance Index 2019. Last year India’s position was 14th.
  • However position 1, 2 and 3 were vacant as no country is doing enough to prevent dangerous climate change. The top position is occupied by Sweden i.e 4th position.
  • On the basis of standardised criteria, the index evaluates and compares the climate protection performance of 56 countries and the European Union (EU), which are together responsible for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • The index is published by Germanwatch, the NewClimate Institute and the Climate Action Network.

Government of India and ADB sign a $31 Million Loan Agreement to develop Tourism and boost Jobs in Tamil Nadu

  • The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a Loan Agreement for $31 million to build-up the Tamil Nadu State Tourism Industry and boost visitor arrivals. 
  • The activities under the project would also boost economic opportunities for the local people.

AIIB Extends $400-m loan for Water Supply Project in AP

  • Beijing-headquartered Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s (AIIB) has approved a $400-million loan for water sanitation project in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The project aims to provide safe drinking water through an extended piped water supply to ensure access to water and sanitation for all and in turn have a positive impact on women and girls in affected communities.
  • Now the overall exposure of the AIIB to India has become $2 billion spread over nine projects.

Tamil Nadu Government Launches 24-Hour Helpline 181 For Women

  • The Tamil Nadu government has launched a 24-hour toll-free helpline 181 for women facing domestic violence and sexual harassment at home or workplaces.
  • The initiative has been developed at a cost of Rs. 62.70 lakh.
  • The service includes various assistance ranging from police help, legal aid or medical services including ambulance, information on welfare schemes aimed at their benefit, besides government aid being provided to victims of domestic violence among others

Four Journalists and a news organisation named TIME’s 2018 Person of the Year

  • TIME Magazine has named four journalists and a new organisation as the TIME’s 2018 Person of the Year whose work has landed them in jail — or cost them their lives.
  • The group has been named as: The Guardians and the War on Truth
  • The four journalists and news organisation are: 

1. Jamal Khashoggi Washington Post columnist murdered for his criticism of the Saudi crown prince.
2. Maria Ressa editor of the Philippine news website Rappler, who was indicted for her critical coverage of its president’s controversially violent policies.
3. Wa Lone

Both Reuters journalists captured in Myanmar while investigating a massacre of Rohingya Muslims.
5. The Capital Gazette Maryland newspaper targeted by a gunman who killed of its five staff members in a mass shooting

  • Sascha Bajin (Coach of Naomi Osaka of Japan) was chosen as the first winner of the WTA Coach of the Year award.

  • International Mountain Day: December 11 (designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003)
  • The theme for International Mountain Day 2018 is ”#MountainsMatter”
  • Purpose: to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.

Padma Shri historian and former Jamia VC, Mushirul Hasan passes away

  • Professor Mushirul Hasan, a renowned historian and former vice-chancellor Jamia Millia of Islamia, passed away at the age of 71.
  • Hasan won a number of awards for his work, including the Padma Shri in 2007.
