Shi Yomi becomes 23rd district of Arunachal Pradesh

  • Arunachal Pradesh got its 23rd district on December 09, 2018 with the formal inauguration of Shi Yomi, carved out of the West Siang district. 
  • The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly had on August 29 passed a bill for the creation of three new districts — Pakke-Kesang, Lepa Rada and Shi Yomi. Two more districts would be created, which would increase the total number of districts to 25

India has one-third of world’s stunted children: Global Nutrition Report 2018

  • The Global Nutrition Report (GNR) 2018, released in Bangkok,Thailand says that India holds almost a third of the world’s burden for stunting.
  • With 46.6 million children who are stunted (low height for age) globally, India (22 million) tops the list of countries followed by Nigeria (13.9 million) and Pakistan (10.7 million).
  • India also accounted for 25.5 million children who are “wasted” (having low weight for height), followed by Nigeria (3.4 million) and Indonesia (3.3 million).
  • Globally 150.8 million children under five years are stunted and 50.5 million are wasted.
  • India is third on the list of countries with more than a million overweight children. The others are China, Indonesia, Egypt, the United States, Brazil and Pakistan.
  • The Global Nutrition Report is an independently produced annual analysis of the state of the world’s nutrition. 
  • India’s report is based on a study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) which used district-level aggregate data from the 20152016 National and Family Health Survey.

India Conducts Successful Test Firing of Long-Range Missile Agni V

  • India successfully test fired a long-range surface-to-surface Nuclear Capable Ballistic missile, Agni V, from the Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, on DEcember 10, 2018.
  • This is the seventh trial of the indigenously-developed missile and further strengthens the country’s deterrence capability.

Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant sets world record for Continuous Operation

  • The Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka has set a new world record, with one of its units, Unit 1, operating uninterrupted for more than 940 days.
  • This is a record among all kinds of nuclear power-generating units, including advanced gas-based reactors (AGR) in the world.
  • The same unit had set a world record in October 2018, by operating uninterrupted for 894 days among Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors.
  • The record was earlier held by Unit 2 of Heysham of the United Kingdom, which operated non-stop for 940 days. 

World’s largest particle smasher – Large Hadron Collider (LHC) takes 2-year break

  • The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) — world’s most powerful particle accelerator — has been stopped for about two years to enable major upgrades and renovations. 
  • Operators of the CERN Control Centre turned off LHC on December 3. The operations will resume in 2021.
  • The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s biggest and most powerful particle accelerator. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

RBI Governor Urjit Patel Resigns With Immediate Effect

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit Patel announced his resignation from the post, effective immediately,.citing personal reasons. 
  • Patel’s term as RBI governor was to end in September 2019. He was the 24th Governor of RBI. 
  • Patel took charge as the RBI governor on 4 September 2016 after Raghuram Rajan resigned from the post on 19 June of that year. 

SWIFT India Ropes in Ex-SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya as Board Chairman

  • SWIFT India has appointed former SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya as the new Chairman of its board.
  • Bhattacharya will succeed former banker M V Nair, who is stepping down after completing five years with the company
  • SWIFT India is a joint venture of top Indian public and private sector banks and SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication). It was created to deliver high-quality domestic financial messaging services to the Indian financial community.

New India Assurance Appoints Atul Sahai as CMD for a 5 year term

  • Atul Sahai has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the country’s largest general insurance company New India Assurance for a period of 5 years.
  • Sahai is currently the General Manager at Oriental Insurance.
  • The post had been lying vacant since July 2018 after former chairman and managing director G Srinivasan retired.

PRO in PMO, Senior Journalist Jagdish Thakkar Passes Away

Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the Prime Minister’s Office and senior journalist Jagdish Thakkar passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi due to health issues. He was 72. 

December 10: Human Rights Day

  • Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December every year.
  • The theme for 2018 is “stand up for the human rights”
  • The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
