PM Modi launches IPPB on Sept 1

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, launched the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi on September 01, 2018.
  • Here are some important points to remember:
    • No. of branches launched: 650 branches and 3,250 access points.
    • The payments bank will accept deposits of up to Rs 1 lakh, offer remittance services, mobile payments/transfers/purchases and other banking services like ATM/debit cards, net banking and third-party fund transfers. It cannot offer loans.
    • The government owns 100 per cent in the IPPB.

  • All the 1.55 lakh post offices in the country will be linked to the IPPB system by December 31, 2018. IPPB has permission to link around 17 crore postal savings bank (PSB) account with its account. 
  • The IPPB will not offer any ATM debit card. Instead, it will provide its customers a QR Code-based biometric card.

Filing of Income Tax Returns registers an upsurge of 71% upto 31st August,2018

  • There has been a marked improvement in the number of Income Tax Returns(ITRs) filed during FY 2018 (upto 31/08/2018, the extended due date of filing) compared to the corresponding period in the preceding year.
  • The total number of ITRs e-filed upto August 31, 2018 was 5.42 crore as against 3.17 crore upto August 31, 2017, marking an increase of 70.86%.

Singphan wildlife sanctuary declared 30th elephant reserve of the country

  • The Nagaland government has declared the Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary as an elephant reserve making it the 30th reserve for elephants in the country.

AYUSH Minister Inaugurates Fourth International Ayurveda Congress at Netherlands

  • Minister of State, (IC), for AYUSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the Fourth International Ayurveda Congress (IAvC) at Netherlands on September 1, 2018.
  • The Minister is in Netherlands from September 1-4, 2018 to participate in the Congress jointly organized by International Maharishi Ayurveda Foundation, Netherlands; All India Ayurvedic Congress, New Delhi and the International Academy of Ayurveda, Pune in association with the Indian Embassy in the Netherlands. 
  • The congress would focus on promotion and propagation of Ayurveda in Netherlands and its neighboring countries of Europe.

India, Nepal ink MoU for Survey of Key Rail Link

  • India and Nepal have signed an MoU on Preliminary Engineering-cum-Traffic Survey on Broad Gauge Rail Line between Raxaul and Kathmandu.
  • Konkan Railway Corporation will conduct the survey for the electrified railway line in consultation with the Nepal government.
  • The Raxaul-Kathmandu rail line is expected to expand connectivity by enhancing people-to-people linkages between the two countries and promoting economic growth and development. 

R Madhavan appointed chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)

  • R. Madhavan took charge as the new chairman and managing director of state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
  • He took charge following the retirement of T Suvarna Raju.

Binoy Kumar Assumes Charge of Secretary in Steel Ministry

  • Binoy Kumar, IAS (TG:83) has taken over as Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India on September 1, 2018.
  • He had been posted as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry since 21st May 2018.
  • Prior to this, Binoy Kumar held the post of Special Secretary, Logistics, in the Department of Commerce, where he continued to hold additional charge till 31st July 2018.

Dr B K Misra to receive Dr B C Roy National Award as an Eminent Medical Person of the Year

  • Dr Basant Kumar Misra will be awarded with the Dr B C Roy National Award in the category of ‘Eminent Medical Person’ of the year. It is the highest award in the field of medicine in India. 
  • He is the head, Department of Surgery, Neurosurgery & Gamma Knife Radiosurgery at P D Hinduja Hospital.

Shri Satish Gujral, Shri T.N. Krishnan and Shri Ratan Thiyam gets Lifetime Achievement Award

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu presented Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Award to three persons:
    • Shri Satish Gujral (Painter and Sculptor)
    • Shri T.N. Krishnan (Violinist)
    • Shri Ratan Thiya (Theatre personality)

Jain monk Tarun Sagar passes away at 51

  • Popular Jain monk Tarun Sagar passed away at Radhapuri Jain Temple in east Delhi after a prolonged illness of jaundice. He was 51.
  • He was known for his lectures, which were termed as Kadve Pravachan (bitter discourses) because they were candidly critical of common practices.
