3-day International Sweet Festival To be Held at Hyderabad from Jan 13

  • The annual International Sweet Festival will be held in Hyderabad at Parade Grounds, Secunderabad from January 13, 2019.
  • The second edition of the 3 day long festival will coincide with kite festival Makar Sankranti and will conclude on January 15, 2019.
  • Representatives from 20 different countries are expected to showcase their local sweet delicacies in the festival.

India Celebrates DRDO Day on January 1

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Day: January 1
  • DRDO is Indian military’s research and development agency formed in 1958 by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production with the Defence Science Organisation.
  • It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.

Government Extends CLSS for MIG Scheme till 31 March 2020

  • The Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) for Middle Income Group (MIG) Scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) has been extended by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs till 31 March 2020.
  • The scheme covers beneficiaries of MIG seeking housing loans for acquisition/ construction of houses (including re-purchase) from Banks, Housing Finance Companies and other such notified institutions.

Paytm Payments Bank Gets Green Signal From RBI to Restart Account Opening

  • Paytm Payments Bank has received the  permission from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to restart opening accounts for its customers from 31 December 2018.
  • The apex bank had barred Paytm Payments Bank from opening bank accounts in June 2018 following an audit by RBI under which the former failed to stick to the RBI norms.

Shikha Sharma Retires as Axis Bank MD & CEO; Amitabh Chaudhry Takes Charge

  • Shikha Sharma, the Managing Director and CEO of Axis Bank, retired from the services of the bank on 31 December 2018.
  • She has been succeeded by Amitabh Chaudhry to the post with effect from January 1, 2019.
  • He will remain in office till December 31, 2021.

Justice AK Sikri is the new Executive Chairman of NALSA

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has nominated Justice AK Sikri as Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) with effect from December 31, 2018.
  • Justice Sikri takes over from Justice Madan B Lokur who retired in November 2018.

Saurabh Kumar Sworn in as Chairman of Ordnance Factory Board

  • Saurabh Kumar has been appointed as the Director General of Ordnance Factories (DGOF) and Chairman of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
  • Kumar, a 1982-batch Indian Ordnance Factory Service officer, is an M-Tech in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
  • Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) headquarter: Kolkata

P K Singh Appointed new Secretary of CCI

  • Pramod Kumar Singh has been appointed to the post of Secretary at Competition Commission of India (CCI).
  • Prior to this, P K Singh was adviser (law) to the competition watchdog,
  • He will act as the nodal officer for the Commission for making or receiving all statutory information and entering into the any formal relationships including signing of memorandums with any foreign agency or other agency with prior approval from Commission and government.

Justice T B N Radhakrishnan Appointed as 1st Chief Justice of Telangana HC

  • The Telangana High Court and Andhra Pradesh High Court have come into being on January 1, 2019.
  • Justice T B N Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
  • Justice Praveen Kumar has been appointed as the acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Veteran Actor Kader Khan Passes Away at 81

  • Veteran actor-writer Kader Khan passed away in Canada on 31 December after prolonged illness. He was 81.
  • He was an Afghan-born Indian-Canadian film actor, screenwriter, comedian, and director who appeared in over 300 films after his debut film in the 1973 film Daag, starring Rajesh Khanna.
