Cabinet Approvals: August 1, 2018

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the following:

  • First extension of Concessional Financing Scheme (CFS), launched in 2015-16, to support Indian Entities bidding for strategically important infrastructure projects abroad. It is proposed to extend the Scheme for another five years from 2018 to 2023.
  • Raising funds up to Rs.15,000 crore as Extra Budgetary Resources (EBR) (Gol Fully Serviced Bonds) for Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) [SBM(G)] during the financial year 2018-19 through NABARD.
  • Expansion of the scope of work of the Society named International Centre for Drinking Water Quality to authorise it for receiving EBR funds for SBM(G), disbursement of the same to the Sates/UTs implementing agencies, and its repayment.
    • Change the name of the Society to “National Centre for Drinking Water, Sanitation and Quality” in place of “International Centre for Drinking Water Quality”.
  • Restructuring of Agricultural Scientists’ Recruitment Board (ASRB) that will now be a 4 Member body instead of 3 Members and have a Chairperson and 3 Members.
    • ASRB would be for a period of three years or till attainment of 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.
    • For the purpose of autonomy, secrecy, accountability and efficient functioning ASRB shall be delinked from ICAR and to be attached with Deptt. of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE) under Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.
  • Policy to permit exploration and exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbons such as Shale oil/gas, Coal Bed Methane (CBM) etc to be carried out under the existing Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs), CBM contracts and Nomination fields to encourage the existing Contractors in the licensed/leased area to unlock the potential of unconventional hydrocarbons in the existing acreages.
  • Opening of 13 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in seven States and a second Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in Alot, District Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.
    • These 13 schools are in Banda (Uttar Pradesh), Washim (Maharashtra), Chakpikarong (Manipur), Parbhani (Maharashtra), Nawada (Bihar), Mirjapur (Uttar Pradesh), Bhadohi (“Uttar Pradesh), Palamau (Jharkhand), Siddipet (Telangana), Kudamalakunte, (Karnataka), CISF Surajpur (Uttar Pradesh), Devkund (Bihar) and Baoli (Uttar Pradesh).The CCEA also approved the establishment of an additional Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) at Alot, Ratlam District, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Grant of Interest Free Loan (IFL) equivalent to the interest during construction (IDC) component of Rs.422.28 crore, 415.77 crore and 419.77 crore for Gorakhpur, Sindri and Barauni projects respectively to Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan Limited (HURL) fertilizer projects. The total value of the IFL will be Rs.1257.82 crore.
  • Issue of fresh 13,87,82,700 equity shares to the extent of 15% of paid up equity capital efface value of Rs. 5/- each by Hindustan Copper Limited(HCL) through the Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) route as per SEBI and other applicable guidelines. As a result, Gol shareholding in HCL will come down from 76.05% to 66.13%. Further, the paid-up share capital of HCL will increase from the present Rs. 462.61 crore to Rs. 532 crore.

World’s first intertidal art gallery opens in Maldives

  • An intertidal art gallery named Coralarium was opened in the Maldives. It is filled with around 30 sculptures acting as a habitat for coral and other marine species.
  • At a depth of 3 m in the lagoon, it features semi-submerged exhibits that disappear and reappear as the tide goes in and out.

Swachhta Pakhwada celebrated successfully across the country by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas

  • Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), its attached offices and Oil & Gas CPSEs under the administrative control of MoPNG celebrated Swachhta Pakhwada fortnight  01st to 15th July, 2018.

BSE launches AI chatbot ‘Ask Motabhai’

  • BSE has introduced a chatbot named Ask Motabhai. 
  • Itis built using ShepHertz Applied AI Services on Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence platform.
  • The chatbot helps provide customized, on-demand information to investors from BSE’s information base.

RBI increases Repo rate by 25 bps in Third Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2018-19

  • As decided in the Third Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2018-19, the RBI has increased the Repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.5%. The revised rates are as under:
    • Repo Rate: 6.5%
    • Reverse Repo Rate: 6.25%
    • MSF and Bank Rate: 6.75%
    • CRR: 4%
    • SLR: 19.5%
  • GDP growth projection for 2018-19 is retained at 7.4 per cent.

Nationwide ‘State Energy Efficiency Preparedness Index’ Released

  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), has released the ‘State Energy Efficiency Preparedness Index’, which assesses state policies and programmes aimed at improving energy efficiency across various sectors.
  • The nationwide Index is a joint effort of the NITI Aayog and Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) that will help to meet the goals on energy security, energy access and climate change. 
  • The ‘Front Runner’ states in the inaugural edition of the Index are: Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Rajasthan based on available data.
  • The Index has 63 indicators across Building, Industry, Municipality, Transport, Agriculture and DISCOM with 4 cross-cutting indicators.
  • States are categorised based on their efforts and achievements towards energy efficiency implementation, as ‘Front Runner’, ‘Achiever’, ‘Contender’ and ‘Aspirant’.

Fortune 500 Companies: 7 Indian firms in top 500; Walmart Top

  • Seven Indian companies have made it to the latest Fortune 500 list of the world’s biggest corporations in terms of revenue.
  • The Overall Ranking has been topped by Walmart ($500,343 M), second is Exxon Mobil and third is Berkshire Hathaway.

Five parliamentarians conferred Outstanding Parliamentarian Award

  • The Indian Parliamentary Group conferred Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards to five members of Parliament for their overall contribution. President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the awards.

    • Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards 2014: Hukmdev Narayan Yadav
    • Outstanding Parliamentarian Awards 2015: Ghulam Nabi Azad

Airtel globally launches ‘Bandwith on Demand’ for business

  • Telecom major Bharti Airtel launched its “Bandwith on Demand” platform globally to enable businesses manage bandwidth requirements on a real-time basis.
  • The platform offers quick activation to access, configure and monitor bandwidth requirements and gives full control to the users to provision bandwidth whenever and wherever they need it.

Neeraj Chopra wins javelin gold at Savo Games

  • Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won gold beating his Chinese Taipei rival Chao-Tsun Cheng at the  Savo Games in Finland.
  • Neeraj threw 85.69m in the event held at Lapinlahti, Finland.

Asian Athletics Championships 2019 to be held in Doha, Qatar

  • The 23rd Asian Athletics Championships will be held in Doha,Qatar from April 19 to April 24, 2019.
  • The biennial continental event which is usually held in July-August has been preponed by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) due to the intensely hot and humid summers in Doha.

Noted ghazal singer Umbayee passes away

  • Noted ghazal singer and composer from Kerala, Umbayee, passed away. He was 68.
  • He was an expert in playing tabla and harmonium.
