Centre signs tripartite ‘Karbi Anglong’ peace accord in Assam

  • The Government of India has signed a tripartite peace accord with the State government of Assam and five insurgent groups from the Karbi Anglong region in Assam, to end decades of violence in the region.
  • The peace accord will grant greater autonomy to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and provide protection to the language, culture and identity of the region and reservation to the Karbi people.
  • A special development package of Rs 1000 crore will be released by the state and centre government over the next five years for undertaking specific projects for development of Karbi  areas.
  • The historic Karbi Anglong Peace Agreement was signed in New Delhi on September 04, 2021, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • The Karbi Anglong region representatives were from the Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA), Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) and the Kuki Liberation Front (KLF).
  • The agreement will take forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “insurgency-free prosperous North East”.
