Centre Empowers All District Magistrates to Constitute Foreigners Tribunals

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has amended the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1964 to form new Foreigners (Tribunals) Amendment Order 2019, dated May 30. It is a quasi-judicial authority.
  • The new law will now empower district magistrates in all States and Union Territories to set up its own Foreigners Tribunals (earlier unique only to Assam) which decides the authenticity of a person’s citizenship which means whether a person staying illegally in India is a foreigner or not.
  • Previously, the powers to constitute tribunals were vested only with the Centre.
