Breakfast scheme Kaalai Unavu Thittam launched in Chennai, Tamil Nadu

  • Tamil Nadu Government launched a breakfast scheme for 1000 school students named Kaalai Unavu Thittam (கால்னி யுனூத் தீட்டம்).

  • The Scheme was launched by Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit in Chennai.

  • The Kaalai Unavu Thittam Scheme is a joint initiative of Akshaya Patra Foundation along with the Chennai Higher Secondary School in Thiruvanmiyur.

  • Under the Kaalai Unavu Thittam Scheme students from 23 corporation run schools (There are 281 corporation run schools in Chennai.) will be served free breakfast every morning before the start of their classes. The breakfast under the Kaalai Unavu Thittam Scheme would consist of either Upma or Idli or Pongal.

  • Number of students to be covered: In the next one month, around 5,000 students would be covered. However in the next academic year, the scheme aims to cover around 20,000 students.
  • Earlier the Akshaya Patra Foundation has approached the Tamil Nadu Government for participation in the mid-day meal scheme. However the TN Govt suggested that they had a strong meals facility for students in noon time and the Foundation can think about implementation of a breakfast programme. After this the Akshaya Patra Foundation came up with this scheme.
