Asian Games 2018 : Highlights

  • The 18th edition of the Asian Games officially began in Indonesian capital Jakarta on August 18, 2018 with opening ceremony held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. 
  • The closing ceremony of the 18th Asian Games was held at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta on September 02, 2018.
  • For the first time, the Asian Games was co-hosted in two cities; Jakarta and Palembang
  • Also for the first time, eSports (a form of competition using video games) and canoe polo will be contested as demonstration sports. eSports is expected to be a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games.
  • Flag bearer for the Indian contingent (Opening Ceremony): Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw)
  • Flag Bearer (Closing Ceremony): Rani Rampal (Hockey Captain Women)
  • The three mascots of the 2018 Asian Games: Kaka, Atung and Bhin Bhin. (Bhin Bhin is a bird of paradise (Paradisaea Apoda) that represent strategy.; Atung is a Bawean deer (Hyelaphus Kuhlii) that represents speed​.; Kaka is a single-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros Sondaicus) that represents strength.)
  • Out of 45 participating nations 37 nations won medals.
  • China topped the Medal tally with 289 medals (G-132, S-92, B-65), Japan was second. India remained on 8th spot with total 69 medals (G-15, S-24, B-30)

  • Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee has won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in the 2018 Asian Games after earning six gold medals and two silver medals in women’s swimming.
  • India ended their Asian Games 2018 campaign with the highest medal tally at the tournament ever, with a total of 69 medals. The previous best was 65 medals in in 2010.
