259-member high-level National Committee headed by Prime Minister constituted to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence

  • The Government of India has set up a 259-member high-level national committee, to be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence.
  • The 259 member national committee will provide policy direction and guidelines for the formulation of programmes for the 75th anniversary commemoration of the Indian Independence.
  • The 75 years of India’s Independence will be observed on 15 August 2022 and the celebrations for the same are proposed to be launched 75 weeks prior to this date on 12 March 2021.
  • 12 March marks the 91st anniversary of the historic Salt Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The celebrations will be held at national and international level in the form of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
  • The high-level committee will hold its first meeting on March 8, 2021.
  • Before  this, a National Implementation Committee was also formed under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to guide the policies and programs to be undertaken by various Ministries.
  • A Committee of Secretaries has also been set up for this purpose.
