Nitin Gadkari Lays Foundation Stone For 3 National Highway Projects Worth Rs 2345 Crores In Odisha

  • The Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, laid the foundation stones for three National Highways projects in Kamakhyanagar, Dhenkanal district of Odisha on February 5, 2019.
  • The total length of the three project is 132 km and carries a cost of Rs 2345 crores.
  • The three projects include:
    • 51.1 km Kamakhyanagar-Duburi section of NH 200 (New NH 53): Rs 761.11 Crore
    • Four laning of the 41.726 km Talcher-Kamakhyanagar section of NH 200/23, (New NH 53): Rs 795.18 Crore
    • 39.4 km Duburi-Chandikhole section of NH 200 (New NH 53): Rs 789.23 Crore
  • Apart from this, the minister also inaugurated port projects at Paradip Port that included:
    • Inauguration of Multipurpose Clean Cargo Berth worth Rs 431 Crore.
    • Foundation stone for six port projects worth Rs 3206 Crore namely:
      • LPG Terminal at South Oil Jetty
      • Mechanization of 3 Coal handling berths
      • Development of New Coal Import Berth
      • Development of Multi Modal Logistic Park
      • Connectivity of MCHP and IOHP at PPT
      • 2nd Exit road including flyover from port

Two Day IORA Meet on Disaster Risk Management Concludes in New Delhi

  • A two-day meeting of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Cluster Group on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) was held in New Delhi on 5-6 February 2019.
  • It was organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
  • IORA is an intergovernmental organisation consisting of 22 member states and nine dialogue partners.
  • The main objective of the meet was to draft work plan for DRM in IORA for strengthening cooperation in disaster response interventions

ISRO Launches India’s 40th Communication Satellite GSAT-31 from French Guiana

  • India’s telecommunication satellite, GSAT-31 was successfully launched on February 06, 2019 by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) from Kourou launch base in French Guiana by Ariane-5 VA-247 launch vehicle.
  • Some features of GSAT-31 are:
    • GSAT-31 is the 40th communication satellite of India.
    • The weight of the satellite is about 2536 kg.
    • It is configured on ISRO’s enhanced I-2K Bus
    • The designed in-orbit operational life of GSAT-31 is about 15 years.
    • It will provide DTH Television Services, connectivity to VSATs for ATM, Stock-exchange, Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG), e-governance applications and ill also be used for bulk data transfer for a host of emerging telecommunication applications.
  • Additionally, Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1/Hellas Sat 4 satellites were also launched along side GSAT-31.

Justice DK Jain appointed to oversee IL&FS asset sale

  • The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has given its consent to appoint Justice (Retd) DK Jain to supervise the operation of the resolution process undertaken by debt-laden IL&FS.
  • The new board of IL&FS has proposed a multi-pronged strategy to revive the company. Government-owned firms, including LIC and SBI, own nearly 40 per cent of the company. 
  • Japan’s Orix Corp has a 23 per cent stake and Abu Dhabi Investment

China welcomes ‘Year of the Pig’ 2019 – New Lunar Year

  • Chinese people celebrated the Lunar New Year on February 05, 2019 as the “Year of the Pig” or Earth Pig year 4717.
  • The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in China, and hundreds of millions of people travel to celebrate it with their families.
  • According to the Chinese zodiac, 2019 is the Year of the Earth Pig, following the Year of the Earth Dog in 2018. Pig – one of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs – which is associated with fertility and prosperity.

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation: February 6

  • The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is an awareness campaign held every year, since 2003, by United Nations on February 6 to eradicate female genital mutilation
  • The theme for 2019 is – Translate Political Decisions into Concrete Actions at the National and Grassroots level to Reach the Goal of Zero Tolerance to FGM

Former cricket coach Rajabhau Oak passed away

  • Former cricket coach Rajabhau Oak, who mentored several players passed away at 85. 

Lok Sabha MP Ladu Kishore Swain Passes Away

  • Indian politician Ladu Kishore Swain passed away due to kidney disease on 5 February 2019, at Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 71.
  • Swain was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014 from Aska constituency in Odisha.
  • He was a member of the Biju Janata Dal political party.
