53rd Edition of “Know India Programme” Held in New Delhi

  • The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, organised the 53rd edition of “Know India Programme” on February 5, 2019 in New Delhi.
  • This edition of Know India Programme for Young Indian Diaspora has 40 participants (24 female and 16 males) from 8 countries, namely Fiji, Guyana, Mauritius, Portugal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago.
  • They are the one who were part of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) and are on a visit to India from 23rd January to 16th February.
  • Maharashtra and Daman & Diu are the partner states of this edition.
  • The main objective of this event is to familiarize the India Diaspora Youth, in the age group of 18-30 years, with developments and achievements made by the country and bringing them closer to the land of their ancestors.

WLPGA 2019 Asia LPG Summit Organised in New Delhi

  • The Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the two day WLPGA 2019 Asia LPG Summit in New Delhi.
  • The Summit will take place on February 5 and 6, 2019.
  • The second edition of the Asia LG summit is being organized by the World LPG Association (WLPGA) in association with major Indian public-sector oil companies (OMCs) Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, and Bharat Petroleum. 
  • The Summit will see participation of 200 private and public companies operating in more than 125 countries
  • This edition will focus on discussing the success of India’s initiatives and growth opportunities in the region.
  • WLPGA is the authoritative global voice for the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) industry and the worldwide industry association which represents the interests of the LPG industry globally.

India-Monaco Business Forum Held in New Delhi

  • The industry chamber FICCI organised the India-Monaco Business Forum in New Delhi on February 4, 2019.
  • The high level delegation of Monaco was lead by Prince of Monaco, Albert II.
  • A partnership agreement was signed between FICCI and Monaco Economic Board to strengthen the institutional relations between the countries for further increasing trade and economic relations.
  • While addressing the Forum, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu said that India and Monaco posses huge scope for cooperation especially in Tourism sector and Climate Change.

Assam Secures Top Rank In Budgetary Practices: Transparency International

  • Based upon a survey conducted by Transparency International, Assam has secured the top position in the ranking of “best practices followed by states in budget formulation”.
  • Assam was followed by Andhra Pradesh and Odisha at second and third position respectively.
  • The survey report stated that Assam is the only state out of the 29 states and 2 union territories to publish a Citizens Budget in the public domain.
  • Only Assam government conducted budget awareness campaigns across 17 districts as per the findings.
  • The survey was based on four parameters– public disclosure, budgetary process, post budget fiscal management and efforts to make budget more transparent and citizen friendly.
  • Meghalaya, Manipur and Punjab featured lowest in the ranking.

Kerala Becomes 1st State to Set Up Drug Price Monitoring and Research Unit

  • Kerala has set up a price monitoring and research unit (PMRU) to track violation of prices of essential drugs and medical devices under the Drugs Price Control Order (DPCO).
  • National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), in 2013, proposed to set up PMRU at the States and Union Territories levels to ensure monitoring the notified prices of medicines, detection of violation of the provisions of DPCO (revised from time to time), pricing compliance and ensuring availability of medicines and other objectives.
  • As a part of the proposal, the first PMRU was established by NPPA in Kerala in collaboration with State Drug Controller, Kerala.

Madhya Pradesh Govt Mandates State Funded Industries to Hire 70% Locals

  • The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath, has announced that it is mandatory for all industries, funded by the state government, to give 70 percent of jobs to the local youths as per the new industrial policy.
  • The newly formed state government introduced the new industrial policy in December 2018, to promote investment in the state.
  • The Minister also stated that only those industries would be given incentives and advantages from the state government which comply with the norms.

Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2019 (KGAF) Begins in Mumbai

  • The 20th edition of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2019 (KGAF) kicked of on February 2, 2019 in Mumbai.
  • India’s biggest cultural street festival for vibrant celebration of art, dance, literature, theatre, workshop, food, and cultural events.
  • The theme for 2019 KGAF is A Measure of Time.
  • The event will conclude on February 10, 2019.
  • Kala Ghoda Art Festival was initiated by the Kala Ghoda Association, a not-for-profit enterprise, in 1999 to offer a space where art can come alive in all its interpretations.

SBI UK chief, Sanjiv Chadha awarded ‘Freedom of the City of London’

  • Sanjiv Chadha the Regional Head of State Bank of India in the UK has been honoured with the ‘Freedom of the City of London’ award in recognition of his contribution to promoting the bilateral relations.
  • The award is given by the City of London Corporation and is given since 13th century to individuals who make an impact in the financial hub of London.

Google India launches campaign #SecurityCheckKiya to stay safe online

  • Google India has initiated a campaign #SecurityCheckKiya to create awareness about online security among the people.
  • During #SecurityCheckKiya, Google elaborated that how important is to conduct a health checkup of their Google Account ensuring the safety of their personal data.
  • The programme is targeted for the youth and the new users of web and advises people to take general precautions that can protect them from online threat.
  • February 05 is celebrated as Safer Internet Day. 

Noted freedom fighter Priyanath Dey passed away at 97

  • Noted freedom fighter and former Odisha MLA Priyanath Dey passed away at the age of 97.
  • Priyanath Dey had joined freedom movement in 1942 and was jailed several times. He was elected to Odisha Legislative Assembly from Jagatsinghpur seat in 1961.

Finnish Olympic Ski-Jumping Champion Matti Nykanen Passes Away

  • Finland ski jumper and four-time Olympic gold medallist, Matti Nykanen, passed away at the age of 55.
  • Nykanen had won five Winter Olympic medals (four gold), nine World Championship medals (five gold), and 22 Finnish Championship medals (14 gold).
  • Nykanen is regarded as one of the best ever ski jumpers and was famously called the ‘Flying Finn’.
